Grede Recognized by Two Customers, Acquires Machine Shop
Grede Holdings LLC, which recently consolidated its head-
quarters in Southfield, Mich., announced its New Castle, Ind., facility was awarded a silver certification from Caterpillar Inc. as part of the OEM’s Supplier Quality Excellence Program (SQEP), and the metalcasting conglomerate recently received an award for outstanding performance from Thomas Built Buses Inc., High Point, N.C. The company also has added a third machining operation with the acquisition of GTL Precision Patterns, Biscoe, N.C.
The New Castle plant supplies Caterpillar with drivetrain
planetary carriers for its heavy axle off-road vehicles and drive sprockets for its road graders and construction equipment. “New Castle received the award because it exceeded Caterpillar quality and delivery performance requirements,” said Todd Heavin, Grede’s senior vice president and chief operating officer. The New Castle facility is the second Grede facility to
earn Caterpillar’s SQEP certification. Earlier this year, the company’s Bessemer, Ala., plant earned the award. “It’s an important award for us because it means the facili-
ties receive preferred status on new business,” Heavin said. Thomas Built Buses’ “Silver Award” recognizes suppliers
who have received a 90% or higher average on the Thomas Built Buses Supplier Performance Report, which measures engineering, scheduling and logistics, purchasing, quality and warranty. Grede manufactures suspension components and brackets for Thomas Built Buses at its Biscoe, N.C., facility. Thomas Built, a subsidiary of Daimler Trucks North America
LLC, is the leading manufacturer of school buses in North Amer- ica. Grede produces ductile, gray and specialty iron castings. “We value our relationship and this recognition from
Thomas,” said Tony Lovell, vice president of sales and mar- keting. “It reflects our long-standing philosophy of going the extra mile to exceed our customers’ expectations.” The acquisition of GTL for an undisclosed sum is intended
to complement Grede’s other two machining operations in Menomonee Falls and Oconomowoc, Wis. GTL will remain in Biscoe, adopt the Grede name and continue to machine components for customers such as Daimler Truck, Volvo/ Mack and Carrier Corp.
