Sean (Yaoxiang) Cui Master of Computer Science, University of Wollongong.


Through the University of Wollongong’s Certificate in Global Workplace Practice (CGWP) program, Sean found a volunteer role in IT network project management and design with Big Heart Enterprise (BHE), a community service division of Mission Australia. CGWP assists international students to improve their employment prospects in Australia and their home countries. Sean’s BHE work enabled him to secure a full-time role in National IT&T for Mission Australia.


What did you learn from your BHE experience? My work experience helped me in showing my talent and capabilities. I reckon that securing a full-time position is determined by the combination of opportunities, abilities and personality. The work experience I had in BHE gave me a good opportunity to show my abilities and personality to BHE management. This is the best ‘vivid résumé’, better than any CV written on paper.


Problem solving and task-driven skills are really compulsory. Furthermore, utilising and transforming the knowledge I learned into my job tasks is a must-do process. My performance and productivity heavily rely on this. Very importantly, learning about working culture and ethics in a company and the general working environment is a key skill that I gained from the experience.


What advice would you offer to others considering volunteer work experience? Voluntary work is where students should start; it is more real than any assessment you have done in your study and more accurately tells you what you are good at and what skills you lack.


Love what you are doing. Doing volunteer work is not only about you, it is more about contributing to our community, so make sure you love what you are doing.


Try your best and be your best. Think this three times a day: “This is my opportunity and I will do my best”. The more you be your best, the bigger the contribution you have made to the community and the more opportunities will turn up for you.

How did the BHE work lead to your current role? Through the volunteer role with BHE, I clearly expressed my talent, skills, capability and personality to the management of Mission Australia. Straight after my 12-week volunteer work, I was nominated into an IT supervisor role at BHE. Because of my volunteer work before, I adapted to the new role very quickly. Two months later, my work had been considered ‘excellent’ and I was offered a permanent full-time position in National IT&T asset management, Corporate Service Division, for Mission Australia.


What motivates you to work in a community service organisation? What motivates me most is the feeling of fulfilment, happiness and the real meaning of giving help. I think helping others and our community is the thing to do. Since I have worked here, I have met a lot of people. Most of them are having a hard time at the moment in their lives. I am helping them, more or less, try to make their lives easier. When I see a smile on their faces, I can share their happiness; when I hear their thanks, I can share their appreciation; when someone holds my hands to express thanks to me, I know I am doing the right thing.


For any person, the very first and common motivation of volunteer work is to gain some experience. However, once I had a chance to get into a community service organisation, I became so into it, and felt I could contribute my help to our community.
