BOBCAT ATTACHMENTS HELP N.J. LANDSCAPER

REACH NATIONAL NOTORIETY

What started as a part-time business in high school has blossomed into a thriving career in the landscape design and build industry. Mark Borst is the president of Borst Landscape and Design in Allendale, N.J. His company has been recognized nationally by multiple trade publications for his success in this fi eld. What’s supporting his company? The answer is dependable Bobcat®

compact loaders, an excavator and attachments.

Borst started his company in 1993 with one truck. Today Borst Landscape and Design brings in about $7 million in revenue; $3 million from the design/build department. The company specializes in residential renovation projects — everything from building retaining walls, drainage projects, installing paver patios, plantings and installing paver and asphalt driveways. “We’re a one-stop shop,” Borst says. “We can provide everything for our customers; designing it, building it and maintaining it.”

As the company grew Borst identifi ed the need for equipment to help his installation crews meet the daily demands of installing new landscape and hardscape features. That prompted his fi rst Bobcat purchase in 1994 — a 743 skid-steer loader.

“As the business grew, projects got bigger, landscape products got bigger and the 743 just wasn’t enough,” he says. So he upgraded to an 873. “We still have it today.” The company has since purchased an 863, three S300s, a 341 compact excavator and numerous attachments.

INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY

“Bobcat attachments allow us to use less labor on our crews and we are able to perform the work faster with less people,” he says. “One example: years ago we completed a fi nal grade on a new property with a rake and three employees. Now, we can perform that same task with a Bobcat landscape rake attachment and one operator in considerably less time.”

When trucks deliver hardscape materials to his offi ce, his Bobcat loaders make quick work of unloading them.

“With a pallet fork attachment we can easily unload pallets of pavers and wall stone,” he says. And the loaders and pallet fork are used again on jobsites where his crews effi ciently transport the materials to the installation area.

Additional attachments help Borst make the most of his machinery investments.

“We have a grapple bucket and a sweeper that we use at our facility, but we’ll take both to a jobsite from time to time,” he says. “We’ve rented a rotary cutter a couple of times to clear jobsites and it was fantastic.”

EXCAVATOR ATTACHMENTS

Borst added a Bobcat compact excavator to his fl eet to complement the loaders and improve his effi ciency. He purchased a clamp attachment and two buckets to maximize the machine’s productivity, and to match the digging conditions.

“Our operators always have both buckets with them; it’s pretty easy for them to change them with the X-Change system,” he says. He’s already logged more than 4,000 hours on the excavator. “We keep it running hard. It’s a durable machine.“

“Our Bobcat loaders, excavator and attachments can do the work of so many people,” he says. “We could not do our jobs without them, and they help us minimize our costs.”
