RUBBER-PLASTIC ROOFING: A TOUGH MIX
The science of recycling tires into crumb rubber (also known as EPDM) has come a long way. Recyclers have solved some of the toughest obstacles, such as removing the metal (from steel belted radials) from the mix. Now manufacturers are learning to make rubber roofing more stable by adding recycled plastics. For example, Majestic Slate from EcoStar contains 80% recycled material, including both high-density polyethylene HDPE (milk jug-type plastic) and tire rubber, which lends to its Class 4 impact rating and 50-year warranty.

SURETOUCH MASONRY The beauty of traditional masonry is captured in this modern, concrete veneer that looks like natural stone or brick. Precut unit shapes and sizes are installed on pre-molded, polystyrene panels. Joints are mortared with an injection gun. The panels insulate to R-13, vastly improving the wall’s thermal performance. Designed for new construction or renovation. www.suretouchusa.com

CERTAINTEED FIBER CEMENT SIDING Made from 50% fly ash, a by-product of coal-fired power plants that has been used in concrete for decades, CertainTeed’s fiber cement takes its environmental footprint seriously. The wood fiber in its siding comes from sustainable forests, and it’s available in various familiar styles, including lapboard, half-rounds, and shingles. Materials are available ready-to-paint, or with ColorMax, a prefinished option. WeatherBoard style is shown. www.certainteed.com

BASF PERVIOUS CONCRETE Also known as no-fines or low-fines concrete, pervious concrete contains voids that let water and air filter through. BASF has tweaked the technology with special admixtures that increase working time and other benefits. The mix can help meet federal guidelines for storm water management. It’s being adopted by builders for parking lots, driveways, and sidewalks, and as an alternative to retention areas and complex drainage systems. www.basf-admixtures.com
