ICC Unveils International Green Construction Code Version 2.0 at 2010 Greenbuild
The International Code Council released the International Green Construction Code (IGCC) Public Version 2.0 in November in front of a large audience at the U.S. Green Building Council’s 2010 Greenbuild Conference in Chicago. The Code Council held a press conference for the release, and the cooperating sponsors of the IGCC -the American Institute of Architects, ASTM International, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) were all in attendance for the announcement.
IGCC Version 2.0 provides a resource tool for jurisdictions considering adoption or amendment of regulations for green and high-performance construction. The document is available as a free download on the Code Council’s website. Public Version 2.0 reflects the work of the IGCC Public Hearings Committee, which conducted a review of 1,500 comments and nearly 120 hours of testimony during eight days of public hearings in Chicago last August.
The IGCC applies to new and existing, traditional and high-performance buildings. It includes ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1 as a jurisdictional compliance option. Coordinated with the ICC family of codes, the IGCC is designed to go beyond traditional code requirements for communities that are pursuing a sustainability goal.
With the release of Version 2.0 of the IGCC, ICC has also extracted a document containing only the indoor and outdoor water efficiency and conservation provisions of the IGCC. The International Green Construction Code -Water Efficiency Provisions, is intended for jurisdictions with a special concern regarding the efficient and sustainable use of water. It is ideal for users who want to rapidly deploy the most advanced water efficiency codes, providing real water savings without giving up flexibility and ease of use. This document can be downloaded free separately on the ICC website.
The press conference began with an introduction from USGBC’s Vice President of Technical Development, Brendan Owens, who highlighted the importance of IGCC and the continued effort by all the cooperating sponsors.
