A
ARE YOU FREE AND CLEAR?
Trees and buildings can dramatically change wind patterns at low altitudes. Make certain your wind turbine is far enough away to operate in the clear.

B
HOW DOES THE WIND BLOW?
Use wind maps (available at www.nrel. gov/gis/wind.html) to determine typical wind conditions for your area. Size tower and turbine appropriately.

C
WHERE DO SHADOWS FALL?
A rotating wind turbine will create both shadows and flickering light patterns. Make sure they won’t fall on living areas (especially your neighbor’s).

D
WILL YOUR NEIGHBOR UNDERSTAND?
It’s prudent to let adjacent residents know exactly where you intend to locate your tower and turbine. They will live with it for many years.

E
IS ANYONE LISTENING?
Newer turbines tend to operate much more quietly than older models, but it doesn’t hurt to place turbines where sound has room to dissipate.

THE BIRD KILL MYTH
While wind turbines do pose a slight risk to birds, when put in context with other common technology, their impact is relatively small. We were surprised to learn that by far the biggest man-made bird terminators are buildings. Birds apparently destroy themselves by the thousands when they attempt to swoop in and out of well-washed glazings.
