Cast Metals Federation Announces U.K. Component, Caster of the Year Awards The Cast Metals Federation (CMF),

West Bromwich, U.K., recently an- nounced that Grainger & Worrall Ltd., Shropshire, U.K., won its Component of the Year award for a V8 cylinder block made for General Motors’ first purpose- built NASCAR racing engine. CastAlum, Powys, U.K., was given the federation’s Company Achievement Award. CMF announced the awards, along

with its Supplier of the Year award, at a ceremony held in late 2010. “The judges recognized [the]

Grainger & Worrall [casting] had man- aged to achieve the exacting standards they regularly achieve in the develop- ment of Formula 1 cylinder blocks...in iron, an astounding technical achieve- ment,” CMF awards organizer John Parker said. “Built using the SinterCast process, the success of this casting is the culmination of investment, com- mitment and development by the company in all stages of production.” Cast in compacted graphite iron

(CGI), the thin-walled, complex and strong casting won for a combination of technical achievement, including +/- 0.75 bore concentricity and the ability to withstand thermal loading on the core, which is 0.094 in. (2.4 mm) from the cylinder bores, and the role the component has played in the company’s succes as the majority suppler of its cylinder blocks for the NASCAR sector. “Winning the [award] is an affirma-

tion of the hard work that has gone into this component,” said Keith Denholm, Grainger & Worrall. “At every stage of its development, it has challenged the team. From material to casting, mea- surement to performance, and tooling to consistency, the requirements of the project were met and resolved.” At the awards ceremony, CastAlum

was given the top Company Achieve- ment Award for its success following a management buyout in 2009 from its American parent Contech LLC, Portage, Mich. “It was the combination of the management team’s commitment to investing in the business and its proven

belief in developing the skills of the workforce, particularly in the heart of a recession, that so impressed the judges,” Parker said. “The whole team has brought about rapid changes, turned the business around and achieved a

50% increase in sales turnover in the globally competitive automotive com- ponent market.” Investment casting tooling producer

Blade Tooling won the 2010 Supplier of the Year Award.
