There’s good reason to jump on the green remodeling bandwagon.
In October, the Harvard Joint Center for Housing
www.jchs.harvard.edu issued a forecast for 2011. Those experts believe that the remodeling sector of the housing market is about to have a double digit growth spurt that will last for several quarters as people reinvest in their homes and take advantage of lower financing costs. They also point out (rather macabrely) that all those foreclosed homes will be coming back on the market in need of retrofit.
Remodeling our existing housing stock is an essential step in slowing climate change. Buildings are the largest producers of CO2 on the planet, and at least 80 million of the approximately 126 million existing units of housing in the United States need serious improvement. They are leaky, poorly insulated, water guzzling relics of the time when heating oil cost less than a dollar a gallon.
The market timing is right. The right products and systems are at your fingertips. All that’s missing is your combination of craftsmanship, skill, and determination to make old housing better than it ever was.
