Enduring the third set, she sealed her hard-earned win after two hours of play. “She’s too strong in the first set. I just got my break in the second set and, luckily, I was able to pull through,” said Krawczyk. The ladies’ singles final show- down is set today at 11 a.m. fol-

GSP takes on Kosheck anew in UFC 124
■ George St-Pierre
TWO-TIME Ultimate Fighting Champion- ship (UFC) welterweight champion George St-Pierre (GSP) will once again return to his own backyard in Montreal, Canada, to face No. 1 contender Josh Koscheck the second time in UFC 124 this Sunday (Manila time). “GSP is one of the best pound-for- pound fighters in the world and Josh Koscheck is not the same fighter Georges fought last time. There is no doubt that this is a title fight between the two best 170-pounders in the world. Koscheck told the people of Montreal he’s going to walk into Georges’ hometown and take the title. This fight is going to blow the roof off the Bell Centre,” said UFC President Dana White. It can be recalled that during UFC 74 on August 27, 2007, GSP controlled Koscheck on the mat and earned a three- round unanimous-decision victory. Now

After being elected in the 15-man board, Dungo was chosen unani- mously to replace his predecessor Pedro Mendoza who served the as- sociation for one term (2007 to 2011) only.
“I’m hoping the newly-elected board members will support me in developing Philippine volleyball,” Dungo told The Manila Times Fri- day after the election at the Hotel Indah in Manila.

Derrick Rose dominates as Bulls beat Lakers
DERRICK ROSE had 29 points and 9 assists as the Chicago Bulls held off a late rally by the Los Angeles Lakers for an 88-84 victory Friday night at the United Center arena. It was the Bulls’ first win in nearly four years over the Lakers whose
score was a season low.
The Bulls hit eight three-pointers, of which Rose scored three. Bulls Kyle Korver also connected on a trio of threes and finished with 13 points for Chicago, who held a 26-13 edge in points off the bench. The two-time defending NBA
champion Lakers were led by Kobe Bryant’s 23 points. Bryant shot a dis- mal nine of 23 from the field. The Lakers had won seven con-
secutive games against the Bulls since a 94-89 Chicago win in De- cember 2006 at the United Center. AFP
Full strength men’s field for Australian Open
ALL of the world’s top 100-ranked men and all but two of the best 100 women are going to take part in next month’s Australian Open, organiz- ers said on Saturday. World No. 1 Rafael Nadal is chas- ing his fourth consecutive major to complete a “Rafa Slam,” while world No. 2 Roger Federer is bidding for a fifth Australian title.
The first entry lists to be released
show Serena Williams and Hunga- ry’s 37th-ranked Agnes Szavay both out with injury.
Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki is campaigning for a maiden Grand Slam title to go with her top ranking.
Organizers said the 104 direct ac- ceptances into the men’s draw in- clude Argentina’s former US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro and Russian Dmitry Tursunov, who both have used their injury-pro- tected rankings. “To have the top 104 players in

Talk ‘N Text attempts to reclaim top spot
TALK ‘N TEXT tries to formalize its claim of the top spot when it faces Air 21 while Ginebra meets Rain or Shine in the elimination round’s penultimate day in the 36th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) All-Filipino Cup at the Araneta Coliseum. A win by the Tropang Texters
over the Express would enable them to tie San Miguel Beer with identical 11-3 record at the end of their elimination assignment. But coach Chot Reyes team would clinch the top spot and the first twice-to-beat incentive because of
ABAP sets eye on Olympic gold
NATIONAL boxing coach Roel Velasco yesterday expressed hopes that the country stands to end its 86- year Olympic gold medal thirst two years from now in the quadrennial conclave’s 2012 edition in London. Speaking at the SCOOP Sa Kamayan
weekly session at the Kamayan Restau- rant-Padre Faura, Velasco said that with the present crop of new talents, the Amateur Boxing Association of the Phil- ippines (ABAP) believes it won’t be long for the Philippines’ long-time dream to become a reality. Velasco himself, brother Mansueto “Onyok” and a host of other Filipino boxer failed to bag the elusive Olympic gold. a higher quotient over coach Ato Agusin’s Beermen. Thus the Beermen drop to second berth but still enjoy a twice-to-beat advan- tage over the No. 7 team, which may either Air 21 (6-7), Rain or Shine (5-7) or Meralco (6-7). A loss by Talk ‘N Text to Air 21 in their 4 p.m. encounter and a win by Ginebra over Rain or Shine in the second game at 6:30 p.m. would forge a two-way tie at second between the Kings and the Tropang Texters with similar 10-4 card.
But still the Tropang Texters
are apt to clinch the second spot by virtue of the winner- over-the-other rule after pulling off with a 109-102 victory over the Kings on Friday.
On the other hand, a loss by
Rain or Shine and Air 21 may send them into seventh and eighth place respectively. Every- thing would still depend though on the outcome of the game between Alaska against Powerade, as well as Rain or Shine against Meralco on the last day of the eliminations Wednesday.

PBA allows Solar TV to find broadcast partner
PHILIPPINE Basketball Associa- tion (PBA) Commissioner Chito Salud confirmed on Friday the PBA Board of Governors has allowed Solar Television network to find a broadcast partner in airing the remaining games of the 36th PBA season.
Salud, through a text message
told The Manila Times that the broadcast partner would be subject to the board’s approval first, “PBA and Solar will continue supporting each other as partners until the end of the season,” he said. Solar Television confirmed earlier reports that it would reformat its programming and that its contract as official
broadcast partner of the PBA is ending. Solar TV’s contract with the PBA expires at the end of August next year and the network had already informed the league that it would not seek renewal in line with the man- agement’s decision.
Salud said the bidding for a new broadcast partner has been moved to January 2011, instead of June after Solar’s decision not to renew the contract.
“One thing is sure—the PBA will remain and fans have nothing to worry about. They will be able to continue enjoying the games whether it would be on Channel 9 or another network,” Salud said. JOSEF T. RAMOS

Oosthuizen misses cut as rookie stays in front
BRITISH Open champion Louis Oosthuizen missed the Alfred Dunhill Championship halfway cut Friday as fellow South African Anthony Michael retained his two-stroke lead. Rookie Michael carded a three-under 69
after finishing with a bogey six for a two- round total of 135 over the par-72 Leopard Creek Country Club that borders the Kruger National Park wildlife paradise. But Oosthuizen, a 28-year native of Mossel Bay in the western Cape and shock winner at Saint Andrews in July, could manage only a 71 for a total of 147 and failed by one stroke to qualify for the remaining two rounds. It was the latest blow for the shock British Open champion after he tore ankle ligaments while hunting three months ago, forcing him to wear a brace in tournaments after a lay-off. And last weekend Oosthuizen finished last in the Sun City Challenge invitation tournament after being the only competitor in a 12-strong field to finish over par. South Africans Alex Haindl, whose
66 was the lowest score of the day in an event co-sanctioned by the European Tour and South African Sunshine Tour, and Dawie van der Walt and Englishman Robert Rock are on 137 and share second spot.

Pinoy, Kenyan runners test mettle in Milo Marathon
DEFENDING champion Crescen- ciano Sabal, record holder Eduardo “Vertek” Buenavista and three-time winner Allan Ballester are set to re- pulse the Kenyan invasion in the Na- tional Finals of the 34th Milo Mara- thon Sunday, which will start and fin- ish at the Quirino Grandstand. The 32-year-old Buenavista, the country’s lone entry in the marathon event of the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, will be pitting skills against the dreaded Kenyans for the first time.
“This will be my first time to go against these Kenyans. But I think, I have a strong chance. I had just re- turned from participating in the Asian games. I think I have enough prepara- tions for this event,” said Buenavista, who settled for 17th place in the Asian Games with a slow time of 2:45:07. The Santo Niño, South Cotabato
native Buenavista, who is the coun- try’s record holder with a time of 2:18.44 he set in Oita, Japan in 2004, said that he would prove his worth
by winning his third Milo national finals crown. “I really want to win. I think we have
to prove it now or we just allow them [Kenyans] to take what belongs to us Filipino runners,” added Buenavista. Buenavista, Sabal and Ballester, also a current member of the PHL national pool, remain a strong favorite over Kenyan qualifiers Abraham Missos, William Kipyego and Philip Ronoh. They are just among the 425 qualifi- ers from the different 17 regional races held by Milo since June of this year. PHL mainstay Jho-An Banayag and reigning women’s titlist Christabel Martes will also pit wares against Ken- yan runner Irene Kipchumba for the P300,000 top purse of the 42- kilometer full marathon event. Nestlé Assistant Vice President and Milo Sports Events Executive Pat Goc- Ong said that they are expecting more than 20,000 runners to participate in the 3-k, 5-k, 10-k and 21-k categories for both men and women.
