Y 3-year-old nephew Calvin has mastered tinkering with my iTouch. Even though he still can’t read, he can differentiate the applications from the games, name the title of each game and even knows how to download only the “free kid games” from the App Store. What’s even more amazing is that he almost learned all these on his own (except for my password). I guess New York resident Kelly Rummelhart felt the same pride and amazement as her 4-year-old son Sawyer showed the same proficiency with her iPad— that is until she saw a mysterious $65-plus charge on her credit card bill. Apparently, Sawyer has been having the time of his life with “The Smurf’s Village” and has unknow- ingly played part in making it one of the highest-grossing application in the iTunes store just a month after its release—despite being a free download.

When mom downloaded the game, she probably thought it was just another inno- cently-cute looking game that could keep her son occupied. Little did she know that it was one of those games where you can actually buy things—using real money. While playing, her son actually bought a bushel and 11 buckets of “Smurfberries” (used to speed up gameplay) that amounted to $66.88. Still, the 36-year-old mom still considers herself lucky that Sawyer didn’t purchase the “wheelbarrow” of Smurfberries which cost $59.99. Parents have already voiced out their complaints about the rising number of accidental buys ever since Apple introduced “in-app purchases” last year. This enabled developers to use the iTunes billing system to sell items and add-ons in their games and applications. Developers have begun using this as their main source of revenue, offering games for free download and relying on in- game purchases to make money. Among the 10 highest-grossing apps in the App Store, six are “free” games, most of which are easy, child-friendly games such as “TapZoo” and

“Bakery Story.” Easy may also refer to how to make mistakes as just two taps can result into a $100 purchase.

Capcom, the publisher of “The Smurfs’

Village,” says it has already added a warning about the option of in-app purchases to the game’s description in the App Store and it’s updating the game to include in-game warnings as well. The warning may alert the parents but it is highly unlikely that a young child who can’t read will notice it. So the next time you lend your any of your Apple gadgets to a child, make sure to check the games they are playing—regularly, because while it might surprise you to see them play so well, you might be in more of a shock once you get your credit card statement.

Are smartphones replacing the DS, PSP?

❋❋❋

It seems that more gamers are ditching their portables in favor of the iPhone and other smartphones. According to a new survey released by market research firm Interpret, “gamers appear to be defecting from their handheld gaming devices to phones to get their gaming kicks.” The survey polled 9,000 US consumers aged between 12 and 65, wherein almost 27.2 percent said they now only play games on their phones despite owning a DS or PSP.

The Interpret report added that roughly 12 million active gamers now played exclusively on smartphones in the second quarter of 2010, up from 7.4 million for the same period the year before. The PSP and DS on the other hand, only grew minimally from 21 million last year to 21.5 million.

This explosive proportional growth of the phone gaming market the report said “could signal a potentially significant threat to or even coup of the reigning handheld sovereigns: Sony and Nintendo.”

This probably means Sony now has to work a lot faster on its rumored Zeus project that integrates an Android-based smartphone with

PSP game functionality. The bigger question is “Will Nintendo follow suit?” ❋❋❋
