Ray at Night exposes first annual Ray of Light

By Margie Palmer SDUN Reporter

North Park’s bohemian art

walk, Ray at Night, is fast approach- ing its 111th consecutive event. In celebration with both this and the holiday season, businesses on Ray Street have decided to shine a new light on the event, illuminating local businesses, the street, the neigh- borhood, and of course, their art. On Dec. 11 Ray Street will be

transformed, featuring illuminated sculptures, massive white balloon clusters containing white LED lights, lighted storefronts and trees. “We’ve put out a call to artists to

submit any form of light sculpture; we’re going to use them to line the sidewalks and the middle of the street,” said Matthew Cirello, owner of Ray Street-based Cirello Gallery. “It’s kind of cool because doing something like this gets people to think outside of the normal.” The walk, which takes place on

the second Saturday of each month, currently involves more than 30 local galleries, businesses and restaurants, many of whom have joined together in forming the Ray at Night Business Association. Members of the associa- tion are hopeful this month’s festival of lights will help renew interest in Ray at Night. Cirello is hopeful the themed

event will attract more people to ad- mire the art, and patronize North Park businesses. “It’s a good way to keep people

coming out, not to just hang out on Ray Street, but [to] walk over to 30th street to get a cocktail,” he

said. “We want Ray at Night not to be about a single night of the month, because a lot of business- es are located in North Park and they’re open every day. The area is a great place to shop for cool, differ- ent things for the holidays. There are a lot of neat little places to go in the neighborhood.” Warp 9 Imaging owner Larry

Stein, who also belongs to the Ray at Night Business Association, is hopeful attendees will see the event as “a little more fun and a little more different than events of the past,” he said. “We thought it would be fun to

make the street look a little more inviting, so we thought we’d give this a try,” Stein said. “And we’re starting to get some good respons- es from our call to artists." While Stein is unsure not sure

how many artists outside of Ray Street will participate, he estimates the number could be as high as 50. “This event is really a first of its

kind for us,” he said. “We’re hopeful this will bring some awareness back to Ray at Night. Recently there’s been some confusion between this and North Park Night, or some people have questioned if this event was on or off, so we wanted people to know it’s alive and well.” In addition to drawing attention

back to Ray at Night, Cirello hopes the event will uplift spirits during the holiday season. “The lights are going to be re-

ally inspiring,” he said. “It’s going to bring an awesome, inspiring, cre- ative feeling to people. It’s going to be fun.”u
