California Field Sedge (Carex praegracilis) California Field Sedge is short and rich green in color and makes an excellent alternative to turf grass. Growing to 6- to- 8-inches tall and spread by rhizomes, also known as the stem of a plant that is usually found underground that sends out roots and shoots from its nodes, these rhizomes form a carpet that tolerates moderate foot traffic. This sedge also serves as solid ground cover. It does well between
and around stepping-stones or mixed with other bulbs, perenni- als and grasses to create a natural meadow look. It also tolerates full sun to partial shade but has a period of summer dormancy in warmer, drier climates. Moderate water requirements make this plant not quite drought-tolerant but it certainly requires less than most lawn grasses.
California Dune Sedge (Carex pansa) Horticulturalists and nurseries alike often confuse the California grass varieties of Dune Sedge, or pansa, and Field Sedge, or

ing, very flat (just a few inches tall at best) ground cover with one- to- 2-inch long narrow leaves that are green on top and white tomentosa beneath. When flat to the ground, the white undersides become exposed to view as the leaf margins edges roll up and inward, and particularly when grown dry, this quality gives the plant an appearance of being multicolored. Small yellow daisy flowers bloom amongst the foliage in summer. Silver Carpet prefers full sun with some shade breaks and seems to tolerate very light traffic. I usually employ this plant between stepping-stones, pavers or flagstones. Lately, I have spec’ed it out for a full lawn replacement and have noticed that it looks best with a planting bed border.u

praegracillis. The confusion lays on how praegracillis was developed from pansa and then introduced as pansa. Confused yet? The key difference between the two is that Dune Sedge prefers sandier soils, while Field Sedge is adaptive to a variety of different soil types.
