“Holidays are beautiful,” Peterson said, “with the Christmas lights and the star on the highest tree in Mission Hills.”


Over the past few years, Peter- son and her group have enjoyed a light and sound extravaganza at the corner of Sunset and Witherby streets. Each Christmas, the walk- ers visit the Mission Hills Nurs- ery “to smell the most beautiful, extravagant Christmas trees in San Diego,” Peterson said.


The group also visits the Mis- sion Hills Farmer’s Market on Fal- con and Washington streets. They may also make a stop at Pioneer Park, once the cemetery on the hill for Old Town. The park is ripe with stories about Irish priests, includ- ing Father Ubach, whose head- stone is in old Catholic cemetery. Cave Couts and Ysadora Bandini’s remains are also buried there. “Did you know we have a vine-


yard in Mission Hills?” Peterson asked. “And a cotton tree? Cotton once grew on trees and was as ex- pensive as silk until cotton bushes and cotton mills came along.”


Peterson and friends also watch for the cochineal bugs on prickly pear plants. She explained that the fuzzy white growth on the plants contain the cochineal insect. Its brilliant red color revolutionized the European dye industry when it was discovered here in this hemisphere. “We also once had a Junque Museum made up of old house- hold items dragged out of the canyons,” she said. “It’s a great group of friendly people, and conversation makes the one-hour walk seem very short indeed,” Peterson said.

The only downside to walking in Mission Hills is sidewalks which Peterson said “are often awful.” So new walkers joining up for the first time will understand why someone will call out “Toe Stub- ber!” the traditional warning of a possible trip-up.


Often after the hour-long jaunt, someone will ask “Where to for dinner?” A small group of people may decide to meet somewhere in Hillcrest or Old Town for optional dinner. Peterson sometimes joins them.


“It’s a great way to spend a Friday evening,” she said.
