THE PLANING HULL

Once the 11.5-foot Dancer had gotten the party started, boat designers started to level the playing field. On top of being just 8.5 feet, the Savage Fury, released in 1996, had the first commercially suc- cessful planing hull. The Fury quickly gave way to other designs inspired by it like the Necky Jive and the Wave Sport X and within four years the round hull had all but disappeared on playboats.

IRISH BROKEN c

PADDLE TRICK Paddling myth or not, this scam is ingenious. A group of Irish freestyle paddlers packed three broken paddles among their other paddles when they flew to the United States to safari around the country. Every time they’d land, they’d claim the airline broke the paddles, showed receipts and cashed out with enough green- backs to fund their flight to the next rodeo. “We’d like to thank our sponsors, Continental, United and American airlines for their support.”

TOW ROPES It is better to give than to receive.

paddling Bars

Without paddling bars as a buffer zone between a day on the river and real life, we’d land back in our apartments still bubbling with epic stories that we’d unload on people who nod politely but frankly don’t give a shit about aerial blunts.

SPONGES Available in your grocery store.

PADDLE SPIN

The year is 1995. You’re in a Dagger Crossfire on a long, flat wave. Now what? With no edges to carve with you don’t dare let the bow wander in either direction. So you twirl your paddle like a high school cheerleader’s baton. People in the eddy go wild and you wonder if life will ever get this good again.

Girls’ Boats Buoyant enough for a small man, but made for a woman. Any man who questions why women’s boats are a good thing is either married or gay.
