BRANCHING OUT Vermeer Readies for Future While owners and operators of Vermeer® tree-care products are
working productively on jobsites throughout the country, behind the scenes the company is re-powering its machines to meet more stringent EPA engine emissions regulations for off-highway equipment.
“Our engineering department is doing an outstanding job of meeting deadlines to build the quality equipment we are known for,” says Todd Roorda, an environmental solutions specialist with Vermeer Corporation. “The performance of our machines will not be affected by these compliance regulations. In fact, performance may actually be improved. We will have plenty of engine options available.”
FINAL DEADLINE FOR REGULATIONS: 2015 The first federal standards for off-highway diesel engines were adopted in 1994 and are being phased in through a series of tiers. Tier 3 regulations are now in effect, with Tier 4 Interim (T4I) due to be implemented by January 1, 2012. Final Tier 4 regulations begin in January 2015 for 174-hp (129.8 kW) and above.
Environmental regulatory agencies are focusing on four types of engine emissions: carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. Final Tier 4 regulations will maintain T4I particulate matter levels (a 90 percent reduction from Tier 3) and require an additional 80 percent reduction in nitrogen oxide levels compared to T4I.
“Customers should feel very comfortable that every engine manufacturer, including Deere, will offer the same level of performance or greater with T4I than they had with Tier 3,” says Doug Laudick, product planning manager for John Deere Power Systems. “In our case, customers should look for higher levels of quality and durability than they have today.”
Emissions Regulations
WHAT ENGINE MANUFACTURERS ARE DOING In developing new engines to meet the emissions regulations, the goal of manufacturers such as John Deere Power Systems (an engine supplier of Vermeer) is to produce environmentally friendly engines that don’t compromise performance, fuel economy, reliability or ease of operation.
