publisher’s note T
hanks for picking up a copy of Charleston Vacation Guide. Wherever you found us – in a local hotel room, at a restaurant, at a carriage company on in any of our hundreds
of distribution locations – we hope you like our magazine and that we’ve made it easy for you to enjoy all Charleston has to offer.
Charleston’s popularity continues to grow. Speaking of popularity, our front cover features the Market, which has been the heart and soul of downtown Charleston for centuries and continues to thrive today. Renovations now underway will make the Market an even more enjoyable place to visit. Members of the trust that is now managing the Market recently traveled around the country, making stops in San Francisco, Boston and elsewhere to study how others have preserved the attractions that make their cities special.
Construction started on the Market in 1788, and, from its completion until today, it has remained the center of Charleston’s commerce. Te products sold at the Market have changed through the years; local residents no longer purchase fish, meat and produce there. Instead, locals and visitors alike stroll through the Market in search of treasures offered by local merchants, craftsmen, artists and photographers. Whether you arrive in the Holy City by car, ship or air, we hope you will find the time to visit the Market.
