Companies like Anvil consolidate the information to give a global overview.” Another reason is the access to local assistance which is all important for corporate travellers working in high risk destinations. Red24's head of sales and product development, Simon Weaver, says, “The real differentiation is that we have services running in the background and can provide assistance if needed. TMCs would not have the security information and alerts that we send out and we have good local services for assistance on the ground.” Down the road, traveller tracking technology

is only going to increase in sophistication especially with the increased penetration of smartphones. Although tracking a traveller’s location via their mobile phone raises certain

privacy issues it is currently the biggest area of development. Red24’s Weaver says progress in location-based services is also being held back by the reliability of software of different mobile devices as well as the fact that not all individuals will have advanced phones. “There is also the big brother effect and individuals do not want to feel they are being watched so companies would have to provide some sort of option,” he adds. International SOS and Control Risk have made progress in this arena, however, jointly unveiling a mobile version of TravelTracker earlier this year. Aimed primarily at security managers, it enables them to locate and contact globally- mobile employees from any one of more than 5,000 different mobile devices.
