Notes from Selsdon If you want to be heard Charles, Start again

In the splendid gardens of Clarence House, Prince Charles’s Start garden party, designed to “help people across the UK lead more sustainable lives”, lauded the wares of the usual suspects. But as I skipped between the vegetable patch and the various corporate stands – Marks & Spencer, Eurostar and B&Q among them – it wasn’t clear how this ‘party’ was helping anybody. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great that the Prince has finally found something to occupy his time between functions; the Prince’s Foundation is no doubt a worthy cause. And having his name behind such an event certainly delivered some impressive press coverage, including a number of spots on the new, gaudy ITV breakfast show. But the actual event didn’t draw the crowds it so desperately needed.

People turned up of course; it’s not every

day HRH opens up his private garden to the general public. But a quick observation of my fellow guests revealed nothing more than the royalist cognoscenti, more interested in having a nose around the Prince’s estate than

learning about sustainability. If you really want to affect change, an initiative of this sort needs to reach beyond the Countryfile bri- gade, to touch ‘real’ people for whom buying organic cheese at their local Waitrose isn’t the norm. On this evidence, Start failed miserably and if it is to be repeated next year, the organ- isers must think again about its objectives.

As this edition of SB was going to press we were fast approaching the 30 September dead- line for those companies likely to feature in the forthcoming Carbon Reduction Commitment to register with the Environment Agency. In the true spirit of transparency, the EA has been posting an update of companies that have successfully submitted their registration form. On the 20 September, the total number stood at 2,431. It certainly makes for interesting reading, not least as a way of seeing whether your rivals are on the ball or not. It would seem that the battle for carbon management supremacy has already started. Check it out at www.environment-agency.gov.uk and search under the CRC scheme pages.
