Electro Motive: producing engineers of the future
Electro Motive is the sponsor of the first Railfreight Engineer of the Future Award, a new award being launched for this year’s Rail Business Awards
N
ot only will the winner of the Railfreight Engineer of the Future Award be presented with the achievement on the evening of the Awards, but they will
also be offered a special training place with Electro Motive in Chicago. Duncan R Scott, MD of Electro Motive,
said: ‘As an organisation we are particularly focused on developing engineers and recognising achievements of the younger members of the industry, so are therefore delighted to be sponsoring this award. ‘Furthermore, we are also very happy
to become associated with an event as prestigious as the Rail Business Awards and be able to offer something which will help someone progress their career in the industry.’ The Railfreight Engineer of the Future
Award is open to young engineers making a valuable contribution through mechanical or electrical engineering projects within the rail freight sector. Candidates must be under 26 years of
age on 5 November, 2010 and be employed by a freight operating company or a Rosco within the freight sector. When it comes to choosing the winner,
the judges will be looking for a candidate who is able to maintain a broad overview of whole-business processes, taking into account the needs of the manufacturer, the operator and the maintainer within the industry. They will need to have a personal
involvement in the development of innovative technical and engineering ideas, methods, products or services that will be used to deliver improved reliability

and availability of the rolling stock asset. Candidates will also be expected to show a level of business understanding and be able to demonstrate that they have leadership potential as well as acumen for the financial aspects of the business. Apart from holding the title of
Railfreight Engineer of the Future for the year ahead, the inaugural winner will receive a detailed training programme designed to develop their career in the long-term, as well as two weeks original equipment manufacture (OEM) training at Electro Motive’s facility, La Grange, in Chicago, with flights and hotel accommodation also provided. The training includes technical and
practical training on the 710 engine, thought to be one of the best diesel engines in the world and typically featured in a Class 66 locomotive.
