magazine overview

The compound semiconductor industry has never been in a healthier state. Despite the tough economic climate, two of the long-established markets - GaAs-based power amplifiers for handsets and optoelectronic devices for internet infrastructure - are performing well. LED sales are booming, due to massive uptake of this light emitting chip for netbook, laptop, and TV screen backlights. Revenue from laser chips is also booming. Increasing Blu-ray player sales are driving up nitride laser production, and high-power lasers are seeing greater deployment in industry.

On top of this, SiC and GaN devices are making inroads in power electronics and RF markets, and III-V multi-junction solar cells are starting to generate electricity on earth as well as in space. What’s more, there is growing interest in exotic materials, such as HgCdTe and the antimonides.

In short, thanks to increased manufacture of chips based from GaAs, InP, GaN, SiC and other forms of compound semiconductor, sales from this industry are on the up, a trend that should continue for many years.

Compound Semiconductor has been the leading provider of news, analysis, opinion, information and services for the worldwide Compound Semiconductor industry since 1995.

As an integral member of a stable of international titles serving the microelectronics’ world Compound Semiconductor is able to draw on the synergies of its sister titles EuroAsia Semiconductor and Solar, to increase its focus and expand its global horizons.
