Access scheme helps developing-world authors

SpringerLink includes semantic linking in books and journals
Springer has relaunched its online platform SpringerLink, which hosts nearly fi ve million documents, including ebooks, journals and reference works. The company says that the redesigned site has a new and fresh concept that includes semantic linking and connects related content across ebooks and journals. SpringerLink now also contains a ‘PDF preview’ feature that provides all readers with a free look inside ebook chapters to be certain that the content matches their information needs. Subscribers not only
have access to an instant overview of the entire ebook, they can also scroll and browse within different chapters of the book and can immediately download the desired content.
In addition, when users perform a search, the technology analyses each search result and compares its digital fi ngerprint to all other documents. This determines which documents are most similar to that article or chapter, ensuring that readers discover content that best meets their research needs.

EndNote for Mac OS X released
Thomson Reuters has released the bibliographic management and publishing solution, EndNote for Mac OS X. With the new version, researchers can import a full- text PDF – or even a folder containing multiple PDF fi les – to add new references with the full text attached. EndNote extracts basic bibliographic information using the Digital Object Identifi ers (DOI) and CrossRef data to create new records in a reference library. PDF fi les are also searchable in EndNote.
Users can also access their references anywhere and
collaborate with colleagues using their EndNote Web account. Reference lists can be sorted by ‘times cited’, date added to the library or date modifi ed to locate references quickly. In addition, authors can use EndNote Web to manage their personal publication lists for the free ResearcherID community, where members are identifi ed uniquely. The new version also includes new ‘Cite While You Write’ features. EndNote links in-text citations to the bibliography automatically in Microsoft Word – with or without hyperlinks. Users also have increased options for formatting footnotes with customisable short forms as well as full support of the APA 6th style, including a multiple author ellipse.
