HMC ALUMNI PROFILE MATHEMATICS GRADUATE, HARVEY MUDD COLLEGE IN TUNE WITH MUDD

Jennifer Lindsay is like many Mudders–multitalented. Not only is she an award- winning musician (violin and voice), she is also an ac- complished mathematician. She managed to pursue both interests while at Mudd, serving as concertmaster of the Pomona College orches- tra, made up of musicians from all of The Claremont Colleges, and earning a degree, with honors, in mathematics. She has since earned two advanced degrees and has entered the working world as a cryptologic engineer (yes, it’s just as mysterious as it sounds), not to mention being named a young alumni trustee at HMC. “I chose Harvey Mudd College because I knew that I could pursue my music and also study the sciences. At first, I worked with my adviser on a major that included math, biology and chemistry. It turned out to be a bit too ambitious, and he helped me to focus instead in applied mathematics. Such personal guidance is available to all Mudders, and for me it was invaluable.”

MUSIC? HOMEWORK? HOMEWORK? MUSIC? “HMC was a great place to learn how to balance my interests, without sacrificing any of them. The proximity of the other Claremont Colleges made it easy to tap into a diversity of music opportunities—chamber music at Scripps, orchestra and choir at Pomona—although the chal- lenges of Mudd’s academic program forced me to organize my time well. It definitely was not a piece of cake (or pi...Sorry, bad math humor). But, I’m better for the experience, because it prepared me to juggle the responsibilities of life after graduation.”

A LIFE IN HARMONY “I went on to complete graduate degrees in operations research (Columbia University) and in computer science (Johns Hopkins Univer- sity) and that led to my current position as a cryptologic engineer at Science Applications International Corporation. I am now part of a team
