For a start, we need to accept that everyone is fallible, beliefs are a matter of choice, and knowledge is just what we know now. It means acknowledging that we constantly make mistakes, even though “it leaves us feeling idiotic and ashamed”, as Kathryn Schulz says in her eye-opener of a book, Being Wrong (£15).


We see mistakes as abnormal, so we justify the decisions that got us into such a mess, edit our memories to erase the times we got it wrong, and find it easier to admit trivial errors than our
