SSW Presents Conference on Social Work Practice with Older Adults

The Springfield College SChool of SoCial Work presented a conference, designed to focus attention on gerontology in social work and to identify significant needs of older adults, on the campus in March. A third goal of the conference, supported by an Appleton Fund Grant, was to stimulate involvement of local social workers in a Community of Practice (COP) in order to develop an inter-organizational continuum that can positively influence the region’s system of elder services. Keynote speaker at the conference, Corinne H. Reider, Ed.D., executive director of

the John A. Hartford Foundation, presented “Improving the Health Care of America’s Older Adults through Social Work.” The foundation is dedicated to improving health care for older Americans. Other sessions addressed important topics in social work for the elderly, including trends in care giving, hoarding among elderly, ageism, elder suicide prevention, and services for minority elderly. The conference was the first program within the new SSW gerontology area

of emphasis. In 2009, the school received a $10,000 grant from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Gero-Ed Center to develop a competency-based aging-specific curriculum during 2009-2011. It was one of 20 schools to receive such a grant.

Richard B. Flynn said, “Fr. Leo has dedicated his life to the spirit side of the spirit-mind-body triangle. He has guided people, espe- cially students, to understand, respect, and love people of all nations, races, religions, and economic situations. He has built bridges of understanding among people of divergent views. It is our honor to recognize his many contributions to the Springfield College community and beyond by naming this space for him.” Hoar has served Springfield College since 1984, and became

the founding director of Springfield College’s United Campus Ministry and Spiritual Life Center when it was reorganized in 2000. In 2003, he received Springfield College’s Cheney Award recognizing his service to the College and community, and his commitment to the Humanics philosophy. He has been part-time associate Catholic chaplain at Springfield College since 2006, after stepping down from the directorship following a medical leave. Naming of the “Father Leo” Meditation Room was made possi-

ble through a targeted fund-raising effort in Hoar’s honor. Springfield College Trustee Peter Andruszkiewicz ’80 and Danielle Andruszkiewicz ‘80 made a generous lead gift that was matched by alumni and close friends of Hoar.
