Pride Athletics

Springfield College enjoyed another successful year in the world of athletics, represented here by some of the championships—team and individual—which the Pride captured in 2009-2010.

Pictured at RIGHT TOP, the men’s volleyball team won its sixth Molten Invitational national champi- onship in Kenosha, Wisc., in mid-April. For Head Coach Charlie Sullivan, it represented his fifth Molten title.

At TOP CENTER, please see the photo that includes Men’s and Women’s Swimming Coach John Taffe, NEWMAC Men’s Diving Champion Brian Sobel, and Men’s and Women’s Diving Coach Peter Avdoulos. Taffe piloted his women’s team to its 10th straight NEWMAC Championship in late February, earning NEWMAC Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year honors. Sobel won NEWMAC individual diving titles on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards and was named the NEWMAC Men’s Diver of the Year. And Avdoulos earned NEWMAC Men’s Diving Coach of the Year honors for his efforts. Meanwhile, at TOP LEFT pictured on Blake Track

are four people intertwined with championship moments. Pictured left to right is senior Nikki Hay, Olympian Erin Pac ’03, Women’s Track & Field Coach Jim Pennington, and senior Steve Headley. In her most supreme moment of the year, Hay won the national championship in the triple jump at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in Greencastle, Ind., in March. Pennington coached both Hay and Pac, perhaps the two most celebrat- ed athletes of his coaching career. Pac won the bronze medal in bobsledding at Whistler Sliding Centre in the most recent Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver in late February. And Steve Headley earned two national championships in 2009—the 55-meter dash indoors, then the 100-meter dash outdoors. This year, Headley, who was coached by Ken Klatka, finished second in the 55-meter dash indoors, and once again won the 100-meter dash outdoors. He was named The U.S. Track & Field

and Cross Country Coaches Association National Track Athlete of the Year for Outdoor Track & Field in Division III. Both Hay and Headley were named NEWMAC Athletes of the Year in their sport.

In addition, there were three other championship teams: ECAC Northeast Bowl Champion Football, NEWMAC women’s swimming and diving, and Pilgrim League men’s lacrosse. Other coaches and players of the year include: NEWMAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year Peter Ferraro with NEWMAC Rookie of the Year Zach Pietras; Pilgrim Lacrosse League Player of the Year Mark Eaton with Coach Keith Bugbee; NEWMAC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year Charlie Brock; and AVCA National Player of the Year AJ Nally, AVCA National Coach of the Year Charlie Sullivan, and Molten Final Four MVP Alberto Bravo in men’s volleyball.1

Men’s Lacrosse, coached by Keith Bugbee, won the 2010 Pilgrim League Championship.
