A Window into All Souls’, Point Loma F
By Drusilla Grubb, parishioner and the Rev. Michael Russell, rector
ounded in a dance studio, All Souls’ Episcopal Church in Point Loma
celebrates art and music as windows to the divine. The sanctuary reflects parishioners’ passion to give God the first and best fruits of their labor. From breathtaking Hubbell windows, to a spectacular Swanson mural, and the organ with its decorative carvings portraying sea life in Point Loma tide pools, it is clear that this parish delights in the arts.
In this creative and nurturing environment, All Souls’ ministers to its community, and to the wider world. Parishioners have been heavily involved in Episcopal Community Services, the Ecumenical Council, the Americas Foundation in Mexico and the Peninsula Shepherd’s Senior Center, which they now house.
For eleven years, All Souls’ has been building support for parishioners Nancy and Gerry Hardison who are engaged in Kenyan developmental mission work. First supporting the food program for 350 children in a Nairobi slum, the Hardisons have now created a range of projects. They support over 20,000 AIDS orphans with an enrichment program, medical care and nutrition. They resource a farmers co-op of over 100 families who have moved from starvation to surplus; and they have undertaken a project to destroy a weed infesting major food crops. All Souls’ serves as a financial agent for these projects, conveying an average of $200,000/year to their missionaries with no administrative costs.
In the local community, All Souls’ is best known for its Christmas Arts and Home Tour. Begun in 1951, the tour ran continuously for 58 years. After a one year hiatus, a reimaged St. Nicholas Home Tour will give children of all ages a chance to experience the love and selfless generosity of their patron saint. Mark your calendars for Saturday, December 4, 2010. Proceeds fund the Hardisons’ work in Africa and the Senior Center.
Mindful that our Lord spoke to different audiences in different ways, All Souls’ has a vibrant children’s chapel that incorporates music, crafts, an age-appropriate service and a children’s sermon.

Sunday morning services are at 8:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.
Over the years, All Souls’ has run Education for Ministry groups, journaling workshops, Bible studies, music enrichment programs, centering prayer and other small group opportunities.
The parish is blessed with clergy bringing a broad range of gifts to God’s table. The Rev. Michael Russell has served as rector for nearly eleven years. In addition to strong preaching and pastoral leadership, Father Russell has twice been a deputy to General Convention and currently serves on the Standing Committee of our diocese. He is nationally recognized as a scholar on Richard Hooker, the founding theologian of Anglicanism and as an advocate for the inclusion of all souls in the life and ministry of the Church.
Father Russell is ably assisted by the Very
Camp Stevens to prepare to welcome the candidates as they arrive with their sponsors.
• Angel Duty: if you can spare only Saturday and/or Sunday, you can still be an Angel. You will work behind the scenes to help the team set up and clean up at crucial times during the weekend.

(FFCC), and Del Norte High School in 4S Ranch to package 200,000 meals for hungry children and families in San Diego County and around the world, and we need your support! We will need several hundred volunteers for this all-day event, and we must raise $50,000 to purchase the special blend food ingredients for these meals. Roughly one-third of the meals will remain in San Diego, and St. Bartholomew’s will work with the diocese and local charity organizations to assess the areas of greatest need. The rest of the meals will support FFCC’s humanitarian efforts in Haiti and Tanzania, Africa. If you or your congregation is interested in supporting this event, please contact the St. Bartholomew’s office at (858) 487-2159 or John David Cowart at
