Abundant Life: Generosity and Gratitude Sharing talents and experience as a form of stewardship
A
round our diocese, we have many shining examples of people who give generously of their material
wealth, but also of their knowledge, their personalities, and their most precious resource – time. Volunteers staff the governing bodies of the diocese – Standing Committee, Corporation and Diocesan Council. They understand that their time, unique talents, ideas, expertise and knowledge are amplifi ed when they share them with others.
Chris Harris, canon for congregational development at St. Paul’s Cathedral, is an excellent example of giving beyond his fi nances. As a tax attorney who worked with private clients and the Internal Revenue Service, he gained expertise in personal fi nances and money management. He observed that even his most well-compensated clients lived with an attitude of “if only I had more money, I would be happy.” Based on that experience, he developed an interactive, entertaining six-week course called “Living Wi$ely: Changing Your Thinking About Money.” He piloted the workshop at the Cathedral, and has since shared it around the diocese, at

six different congregations, Diocesan Convention and at Ministry Day.
“This course helps people explore their own relationships to money and develop practical tools to control their fi nances instead of feeling controlled by them,” said Harris.
“I have a deeper understanding of, and appreciation for, how the diocese undergirds the important work carried out by congregations.”
“Chris Harris’ commitment to changing people’s thinking about money so that they are more free to live into the abundance God has given them is an act of true stewardship,” said the Rt. Rev. James R. Mathes, bishop. “Teaching this class throughout the diocese is an example of generosity, being the greater church and sharing his God-given gifts with the wider diocese.”
As a diocese, our strength as a community is rooted in our interconnectedness. When volunteers team up with the Offi ce of
the Bishop, connectivity among congregations fl ows naturally from the relationships that spring up in the midst of work projects. Nancy Holland from All Souls’, Point Loma; Joey Freund from St. Bartholomew’s, Poway; Paulette Glauser from St. Mark’s, City Heights and Steve Turnbull from St. David’s

have all demonstrated their investment in the diocese by volunteering their time in the Offi ce of the Bishop.
