Work (life) begins at 50

21% 15% 11% 72% 29%

of those who had changed their career did so due to redundancy

were looking for a change of direction in their working life

changed career to find something less demanding and with less pressure

who did switch careers moved into an entirely different industry

cited a new challenge as a reason to change career direction

Pay linked to performance

CAREER DOCTOR

Q: I’ve had my appraisal but I’m disap- pointed with the feedback I got from my manager. Should I look for a new job?

A: It’s always disappointing to receive negative feedback at an appraisal – but remember an appraisal is there to help you continually improve your skills and for your career development. It’s worth working with your manager to identify the areas they feel you’re falling down in, and looking at how you can overcome these – whether through shadowing a colleague, training or taking on new challenges. Next, schedule regular mini-appraisals with the boss, ideally every three months or so, so you can chart your progress and get regular feedback. Finally, seek support from colleagues you admire, learn from them and ask them for their advice on your performance. The worst thing you can do is quit – the chances are you’ll only make the same mistakes again in a new role without learning from them.

The Kelly Global Workforce Index has revealed that more than half of UK employees feel they would be more productive in the office if their salary was linked to performance outcomes, and Gen Y (aged 18-29) were most keen on the idea. It’s traditionally sales roles that motivate staff with performance-based earnings, but the idea could also help boost morale and productivity for PAs. Andrew Cook, Kelly Services’ Interim General Manager for UK & Ireland, said: “Many employees are actually quite comfortable about some element of their compensation being tied to their individual or group performance. This indicates that many are confident in their ability to perform their jobs well and believe they can share in the rewards of improved workplace productivity.”

IN BRIEF

THE TRUST IS GONE It’s not just our bank balances that have suffered in the recession – research from Ceridian reveals that a quarter of employees no longer trust their manager since the credit crunch struck.

LONDON IS IT According to Greenlight’s quarterly report, UK online job searches for London- based roles has soared by 10 per cent since March. Their findings also revealed an increase in search for career advice – up from just 14,800 in March to one million in June.

It’s not what you know

Job hunters take note... when it comes to finding a job it’s not what you know but who you know that could be your greatest asset. Research from Edinburgh Napier University has revealed that the more employed friends you have, the higher their job status and the stronger your ties with them the more likely you are to land a job. The study into social networks and employment also found that people under

50 tended to have significantly higher numbers of contacts and more interaction within their social networks than the over 50s. But, workers over the age of 50 were most likely to rely on their smaller social networks in order to find work through ‘word of mouth’. So, if you’re thinking of moving jobs then it might be worth recon- necting with some of your friends and putting a bit more effort into socialising.
