George F. Arner TENNIS PLAYER

George F. Arner, 58, who was a tennis prodigy as a child and one of the D.C. area’s finest young players and who later maintained tennis courts at private clubs, died Aug. 6 at his mother’s home in Bethesda. According to public records and family sources, he took an overdose of painkillers af- ter learning of a diagnosis of ter- minal cancer. George Frederick Arner was born in Takoma Park and began playing tennis as a child. In 1961, when he was 8 years old, he teamed with his father in the Na- tional Father-Son Clay Court Championships at Edgemoor ten- nis club in Bethesda. A Washington Post article called him “the smallest crowd pleaser of the day” and continued, “Little George, blond, tanned, blue-eyed and all of 47 inches tall, had the movements and expres- sions of a tournament veteran.” As a teen, Mr. Arner was one of the top-ranked amateur players in the Washington and mid-Atlantic regions. He won Maryland state junior championships in singles and doubles in 1969. He led Walt Whitman High School to the Montgomery County high school tennis championship in 1971, win- ning the boys’ singles title. In 1973, Mr. Arner won the

men’s singles and men’s doubles championships at the D.C. Rec- reation Tennis Tournament. He received tennis scholarships to the University of Maryland and George Washington University. As an adult, Mr. Arner main- tained tennis courts at the Edge- moor Club and Chevy Chase clubs and at private homes. He occa- sionally gave tennis lessons and was a tennis and ski instructor at Bryce Resort in Basye, Va., in the early 1980s. He played in tournaments well into his 40s and was a member of the Edgemoor Club. He frequent- ed Bethesda coffee shops, was known for his good humor and enjoyed reading and swimming when not playing tennis. Survivors include his parents,
