Communicating GA2010

This year there were more ways than ever to follow what was happening at the Church of God General Assembly. Here are some of the highlights:

reports to serve in elected or appointed positions. After much debate, the item was amended and approved to make these ministers ineligible both at the state/regional and international levels of the church.

Following items approved by house vote dealt with ineligibility of ministers who present budgets to a divisional leader to serve on the Executive Council, the deletion of the commissioning service for state overseers at the General Assembly (this will be held at a later gathering), and allowing up to two weeks for appoint- ments to be announced.

Item 16 also passed, which prioritizes the net gain from disbanded church property sales for church planting. The final item on the General Council con- cerned opportunities for churches outside of the denomination to become affili- ated with the Church of God as associate members. The measure and its compo- nents were referred back to the Executive Council to be reconsidered at the 2012 General Assembly.

Great Commission Emphasized

While business is a vital portion of the General Assembly, fellowship and worship bring unity and clarification to the process. Three worship services

were held during GA2010, beginning on Wednesday evening as 15,000 delegates packed the Orange County Convention Center to hear a powerful message from evangelist Franklin Graham and expe- rience the dynamic music ministry of Israel Houghton. A similarly large crowd packed the house on Thurs- day evening as First Assistant General Overseer Tim Hill preached an anointed word on revival to the missions-night gathering, which included over 300 mis- sionaries from around the globe who paraded into the service, many in native dress. During the service, a presentation was made to introduce the Church of God to the Children of the World initiative. In the final service of the 73rd Assem- bly, General Overseer Raymond Culpep- per clarified the message of the GA2010 theme, “Engaging the Missional Man- date,” as he outlined scriptural guidelines challenging everyone to help carry out the Great Commission.

As happened with recent Assemblies, a website was introduced specially for GA2010. The site went on line January 4 and served as the prima- ry link for pre-registration and housing, as well as news and information about Orlando, sched- ule, and announcements. The site remained active throughout the week with postings of news releases and the elections and appoint- ments document on August 1. The web link will remain active on the Church of God site (www.churchofgod.org) until the end of 2010.

General Assembly Today For over 20 years, a daily newspaper has been produced during the General Assembly to report news and events and promote church ministries. A PDF version of each day is available for viewing on the GA2010 website.

For the first time, the General Assembly went “social” with a Twitter page dedicated to the event. People fol- lowed GA2010 on Twitter: @cogga2010. Most tweets about the General Assem- bly include hashtag #cogga.
