right decision to qualify a source. According to Kashanipour, a pur-

chasing organization typically nets a 2% improvement in cost in a down economy. Since its purchasing reor- ganization two years ago, Navistar has performed four times better. “It’s not because we

slashed costs or beat up our suppliers,” he said. “We got true cost reduc- tion by taking waste out of the system.”

the years, it chose key strategies to outsource some parts.” Navistar has made an effort to bring

some components integral to the suc- cess of its clean emissions technologies back under its wing through the estab- lishment of Pure Power Technologies. Earlier this year, the

Waukesha metalcasting facility’s union signed a five-year contract, sig- naling a willingness to work with the company as it transitioned to a jobbing plant to remain in business. As a result, the facility is a key cog in Navistar’s clean emis- sions strategy, which entails reducing emis- sions produced by its engines by using a non- urea based in-cylinder solution and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. As part of Pure

nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions produced in-cylinder through a method called Advanced EGR (exhaust gas recirculation). Other companies’ emissions control methods involve addressing NOx emis- sions after they have been formed in the engine. Navistar feels so confi dent about its clean emis- sion technology, which is featured in its MaxxForce® line of engines, it formed a new division focused on the technology called Pure Power Technologies. Within Pure Power Technologies are individual businesses that produce fuel systems, advanced valves, thermal management devices and complex castings. Pure Power Technologies also recently acquired a stake in an after-treatment company that makes a solid form of ammonia for fuel cells. “We don’t want to be just an assembler,” said Robert

N

Carso, director of marketing and global brand strategy at Navistar. “We want to be a leader, and in order to do that, you have to have core competencies in key technologies. Pure Power Technologies is really focused on that mental- ity and strategic path.” Pure Power Metalcasting Group, Waukesha, Wis., will

produce the complex castings used in engines featuring EGR technology, among other products. “We have these individual technologies that not only apply to our MaxxForce

engines but could be fuel systems or after-treatment for other customers in the marketplace,” said Houman Kashanipour, president of Pure Power Tech- nologies. “We wanted to pull all of this together, and that is why we came up with Pure Power.”
