the most expensive for passen- gers, while Baltimore-Washing- ton International Marshall Air- port ranks among the cheapest. The fares seemed to be luring
travelers increasingly to BWI and its low-cost carriers, as the air- port on Monday announced that June was the second-busiest month in its history.
Only six of the 100 busiest air-
ports had steeper average fares than Dulles, where the average
fare was $413, while BWI ranked 16th-cheapest, with an average fare of $277. Huntsville, Ala., topped the most-expensive list, with an average fare of about $500, followed by airports in Charleston, S.C.; Knoxville, Tenn.; and Memphis. Atlantic City is the nation’s cheapest airport, with the aver- age ticket costing about $188, fol- lowed by Long Beach, Calif.; Bur- bank, Calif.; and Orlando. The

The nearly 2.1 million com- mercial passengers flying through BWI’s terminals in June represented a 9 percent increase over the same period last year and marked the airport’s second- busiest month; August 2001 maintains the top spot. South- west Airlines accounts for more than half of the airport’s market share, and the airline saw a near- ly 15 percent increase in flights in and out of BWI from the previ- ous year. BWI’s other low-fare carriers,

Study: Cancer uses fructose to multiply

washington — Pancreatic tu- mor cells use fructose to divide and proliferate, U.S. researchers said Monday in a study that chal- lenges the common wisdom that all sugars are the same. Tumor cells fed both glucose and fructose used the two sugars in two different ways, the team at the University of California Los Angeles found. They said their finding, pub- lished in the journal Cancer Re- search, might help explain other studies that have linked fructose intake with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest cancer types. “These findings show that can- cer cells can readily metabolize fructose to increase prolifera- tion,” Anthony Heaney of UCLA’s Jonsson Cancer Center and col- leagues wrote. “They have major significance for cancer patients given dietary refined fructose consumption, and indicate that efforts to re- duce refined fructose intake or inhibit fructose-mediated actions may disrupt cancer growth." Americans take in large amounts of fructose, mainly in high-fructose corn syrup, a mix of fructose and glucose that is used in soft drinks, bread and a range of other foods.
