no such deal is in place for anyone to join the network’s singing competition next season. “No one has signed a deal on either side of the camera to be on ‘Idol’ who wasn’t on it last year,” Fox Entertainment chairman Peter Rice convolutedly told critics attending Fox’s day at Summer TV Press Tour 2010. Fox seemed unprepared for
what Rice called last week’s “tremendous speculation” in the press about new judges for the show. Tyler and Jennifer Lopez are leading the pack said to be in the running to help revive the franchise, which, while still America’s most popular television series, took a ratings hit last season — it got beat six weeks in the ratings by ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.” “Much of the information is
accurate, and some of the information is wildly inaccurate,” Rice said of last week’s press pile-on. But he declined to say which is which, explaining, “I am not going to get into speculation . . . however much fun that might be for you — or your readers.” Those reports broke out like a
bad rash immediately after the network announced the departure of last year’s Great Idea for replacing Paula Abdul,
MICHAEL BECKER/FOX NO HARMONY: Even the word on Randy Jackson (with Atlanta auditioner Larry Platt) is mum.
Ellen DeGeneres, after just one season on the show. They only made that announcement, Rice said, because they thought it would be “disingenuous” to come to the press tour and talk about Ellen on the show when they knew she was not coming back. According to Rice, DeGeneres
had told the network in June she “did not feel like the show was a good fit for her.” Fox tried to talk Ellen into
staying, promising her things would be “different” this coming season. But she persisted and the network finally agreed to look for someone to replace her — no skin off their nose, since “we
were doing it anyway, because Simon [Cowell] was leaving,” Rice said.
At some point, the network had the option to tell her “we can’t replace you” or “we can move on without you,” he continued. As of last week, they
apparently were close enough

FAST BREAK: O’Neal gets behind the wheel on “Shaq Vs.” HIGHLIGHTS
Turns out “Nashville Star” winner Melissa Lawson’s life turned into a bit of a mess after the show — while she was on tour and recording, her husband had an affair. So in the wake of her personal life and career in shambles, Lawson turns to none other than Tony Robbins to help on “Breakthrough With Tony Robbins” (NBC at 8 p.m.). Chef Gordon Ramsay tests the contestants’ senses of flavor when they have to re-create a dish without actually knowing any of the ingredients on “Hell’s Kitchen” (Fox at 8), and later, the winning chef gets a day of relaxation, while another has a breakdown in the kitchen. On the heels of a few shows from Canada doing okay-ish ratings for broadcast networks in the summer, CW premieres Canadian comedy “18 to Life” (at 9 and 9:30), about two 18-year-old neighbors — with warring families — who get married after a high-stakes game of Truth or Dare. Shaquille O’Neal’s reality show
“Shaq Vs.” (ABC at 9) — in which the NBA superstar challenges other athletes in their own sports — takes an odd twist in the Season 2 premiere, as Shaq travels to Washington to take on . . . 15-year-old Scripps National Spelling Bee champion Kavya Shivashankar? Sure enough, Shaq tries to expand his horizons with a spelling challenge, and even gets a little help from the champ’s sister, 8-year-old Vanya. But first, Shaq tries to squeeze
his 7-foot-1, 325-pound frame into a stock car to compete against Dale Earnhardt Jr. in a NASCAR race in North Carolina. Shark Week continues on Discovery, though anyone taking a beachside vacation in the next few weeks should take caution before watching “Shark Bite Beach” (Discovery at 9), which looks at the attacks along the California and Mexico coasts in 2008.
Season 3 of “The Rachel Zoe
Project” (Bravo at 10) kicks off with the stylist’s team reeling after Zoe fires her assistant, Taylor; and in the midst of the chaos, everyone must work to get Demi Moore ready for a photo shoot.
A couple of lottery winners

Social-climbing sister could be in for a fall
Adapted from a recent online discussion:
Hi Carolyn:
My sister has basically transformed into a different person since marrying into this kind of New York, semi-socialite family. I think she works hard to conceal where she comes from, which means cutting ties with me and our dad. What’s worse, I see signs her marriage will not last, and I don’t want to resent her if/when she shows up looking for
support. Any suggestions? Washington, D.C.
I know it’s asking a lot, but at least know intellectually that this is not personal. You described someone who doesn’t like herself, is trying to outrun who she is, and who may well fail publicly and painfully. This is a loved one in pain.
CAROLYN HAX
Know that, and you’ll be well positioned to help her regroup and, I hope, make some peace with her family. Now, whether she accepts your help will be up to her. Should her marriage implode, she might be ready to do some hard work on learning to like and accept herself. She might also tee up the next person who offers her a chance to become someone else. Either way, it’s not about you. The part that’s about you is how you react to her social climbing. Whether you’re insulted by it, amused, bemused,
jealous, indifferent, worried — it’s imperative that you recognize how you’re feeling and deal with that honestly, instead of bringing ulterior motives to your relationship. It’s when you feel one way and
purport to be another — e.g., feel jealous but act concerned about her well-being, or feel insulted but feign indifference — that you’ll be punitive or judgmental when being supportive without judging would better serve all involved.
Re: Sister: What exactly is social climbing?
People don’t seem to mind when people achieve material success through hard work . . . so how is social climbing different from
moving up the economic ladder? Anonymous
Social climbing involves can vary, but that’s the nut.
Re: Sister: I can understand her not
wanting people to know where she came from. Where we live now there are people with a lot of money and I feel kind of inferior to them. They can afford stuff I can’t and just have better lives. Weekends we have to do work around the house and errands, and they have housekeepers and so can have more fun.

choosing people for the status they convey instead of the company they provide. Details
inferior, in the strictly material sense, but quality of life is independent of quality of character; just ask anyone in the service profession who has ever been treated like dirt by someone who feels entitled. There will always be someone richer, better equipped, having
more fun, whatever. But we all usually manage that
just fine if we’re listening to great music while we do dishes vs. watching someone you regard as a peer enjoy a lifestyle that’s out of your reach. Still, that’s just a shrug and an
“oh, well” to people who are happy with their lives. Who would trade a beloved spouse, family, career, passion or friend network for plush weekends? If you’d really trade lives, then your life is begging you to seek more purpose.
