This is my first year with the Tigers, and no one is more excited than I am. I am eager to play at Comerica Park and to get to know Detroit's great fans. I am enthusiastic about working with my new teammates to compete for the American League pennant and another Tigers World Series. Most of all, I cannot wait to be a part of the Detroit community, to meet new people and find ways to help them. I am excited to have the Tigers mascot Paws to help me do that. Paws makes a lot of appearances to help the team connect with the community, and this spring Paws is joining me and my teammates in a program to keep kids reading, learning and having fun all year long. We are calling this program Paws for Reading. We picked that name, not just because Paws is involved, but because we want you to PAUSE every day to do some reading.
Reading is like pitching: The more you do it, the better you get. When you work on your skills, your skills get stronger. When you master one thing, the next thing is easier, and when you start to be successful, you find it is fun to succeed. So as we start a new season, let's work together. Paws for Reading — it's how you read to succeed.
Ready, Set…READ!
Reading is a skill that will help you all through life. Reading will help you learn what you need for jobs. It will help you stay informed about events. It will help you find out what movie or restaurant or computer is best for you.
Reading is also a gift. It gives you a way to entertain yourself. It gives you a way to see new places and meet new people. It gives you a way to have adventures. It gives you a way to imagine new worlds or new ideas. It gives you a way to grow and succeed. This special section — “Paws for Reading” — is designed to get you reading. It offers ways to find books you will like and tips on how to make the most of any reading you do. It includes stories about Tigers players and how reading has helped them succeed, learn and enjoy life. It includes suggestions on books you might like, and a Reading Scoreboard on which you can record those books over the summer as you follow the Tigers.
