A Green Vision

Sarah Green, the University of Cumbria’s Principal Lecturer in Sustainable Engineering at Energus, has launched a new foundation degree in the subject.

It offers school leavers and those already in work the opportunity to study–either full or part-time–a palette of engineering-related topics including design, thermodynamics, materials, risk analysis, manufacturing and electronics.

Sarah says, “Cumbrian employers need well-educated graduate engineers equipped with a ‘toolbox’ of engineering skills and a capacity for innovation, crucial for success in the global engineering marketplace.

The pick’n’mix approach is particularly useful for those working engineers chasing skills and expertise relevant to their own particular sectors but those completing the FdSc will also be able to progress towards a full honours degree in the subject and registration as IEng or CEng with the engineering council.”

Tackling global warming through engineering is crucial. “It’s clear that if

we are to reduce CO² levels, we have to embrace energy efficiency,” says Sarah.

Fifty per cent of the carbon dioxide in the UK emanates from existing buildings. If we can create better designed buildings, make them with better materials and fit them with better heating control systems then we will start to have a positive effect on CO² emissions.”

The engineering equipment inside Energus is particularly impressive, rivalling and even surpassing that of universities with higher engineering profiles.
