A dream novel
University of Cumbria creative writing graduate Claire Lewis has published her second novel A Sick Work of Art.

Inspired by a dream, it was based on a short story she completed whilst studying at the University’s Brampton Road campus in Carlisle. “I really liked the story but never quite felt it was finished. Shortly after moving to Gateshead I started writing stories based around loneliness. Somehow this merged with the ideas I’d had for A Sick Work of Art and it turned into a novel.”

The book concerns Maxie, a 24-year-old woman living alone in Newcastle after her boyfriend joins the Royal Marines. Lonely and unsure of her destiny she fills her time working in the coffee shop of
an art gallery. After viewing an internet video of an artist who filmed himself killing someone, Maxie becomes mixed up with the murder. Gradually she learns more about the killing and against this backdrop Maxie tries to reconnect with her boyfriend.
The opening chapter of A Sick Work of Art was included in Ten Years After, an anthology of eleven unpublished writers brought out to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Northern Writers’ Awards.
Claire also won the Northern Promise Award last year after submitting the first chapter of The Dinosaur Room, her first novel written whilst studying in Carlisle.
Glacier expedition for outdoor studies student Katy
Outdoor studies student Katy Nelson led a scientific expedition across a Norwegian glacier to study the impact of climate change.
The 20-year-old from the Ambleside campus joined the Tunsbergdalsbreen Project 2009 in August. It was organised by the Brathay Exploration Group working in conjunction with the Field Studies Council, Norwegian Glacier Museum and Ultveit-Moe Climate Centre.
