Certified Surgical Tech- nologist and Crisis Inter- vention Specialist in the Florida Panhandle, and Candidate PhD in Public Health & Relations, is involved in various outreach and commu-

M

nity projects to contribute to her Doctoral dissertation. One such project offers local teenagers interested in the medical profession the opportunity of a lifetime: the opportunity to spend a week at an accredited school, learning more about what it means to be a doctor and practicing some of the skills required. Watts-Hopkins has teamed up with Dr. Anton Scheep- ers, founder of the internationally acclaimed The Apprentice Doctor® program, to offer The Apprentice Doctor Premedical Summer Camp from August 2-6 in Tampa, Florida. Selected Northwest Florida high school students (or recent graduates) will charter a bus to Tampa for the week-long training. Dr. Scheepers will be host and presenter, while Watts-Hopkins will serve as co-host. Applications are now being accepted. The Apprentice Doctor is a unique mentoring system

consisting of The Apprentice Doctor Course material, Medi- cal Kits, Premedical Workshops and Camps as well as The Apprentice Doctor supporting website. Course material is accredited for high school science credits. The Apprentice Doctor Foundation has been associated with various projects of the American Medical Association. Last year Dr. Scheep- ers presented a workshop for 16 students of Oprah Winfrey’s Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. A full camp program schedule is available at www.

TheApprenticeDoctor.com. The activities are numerous but include learning how to scrub properly in operating theater like a surgeon; becoming proficient in suturing skills and learning how to tie surgical knots; developing and practic- ing many useful medical skills, taught by practicing medical professionals. Students will handle real medical instruments and items, some of which are included in their take-home kit. Attendees will receive an accredited certificate to add to their application to university and medical school. Hospitals, churches, and other organizations are encour- aged to contact Watts-Hopkins about sponsoring a child to attend this camp. Sponsored teens will, in turn, offer four weeks of voluntary service to the contributing organization. Other promotional benefits are available for sponsoring agencies. Even Pirates Recycle! T

he Greater Ft Walton Beach Green Taskforce recycled at the

55th Billy Bowlegs event. Despite the weather, the Taskforce collected over 350lbs of aluminum cans, and with the help of the City of Ft Walton Beach’s mobile recycling trailer, was able to collect remaining single stream recyclable items. The money raised from the aluminum cans will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House. The Green Awareness Taskforce collected recyclable items from metal recycling bins that were placed around the Ft Walton Beach Landing and from volunteers who collected bags from boaters. A few ROW (Recycling on the Water) members initiated recycling efforts at Crab Island on Sunday for a few hours. A “collection boat” was even made from recycled plastic bottles! This effort would not be possible without the help from Mike Wright and his volunteers from Emerald Coast McDonalds, Charles DuPlantis & Ray Watson from Boogies Water Sports, Allen Lassiter from the City of Ft Walton Beach, Jim Reece Okaloosa County Recycling Office, James Payne Chamber Special Events Committee Member, Green Taskforce Members - Nick Chubb (ROW), Char Gibic- sar (ROW), Ann White, Charles Le Vessure, Choctaw ROTC members, Lydia Johnson and Chris Eilertsen. Visit www.gogreenoka- loosa.com to see pictures from the event. While you are on the website, take the Green Aware- ness Pledge. Everyone is welcome to attend monthly Green Aware- ness Taskforce meetings the 1st Tuesday of each month at 8:15am at the Ft Walton Beach Chamber Conference Room. June’s speaker was Sheila Dunning University of Florida/IFAS Okaloosa County Commercial Horticulture. Her presentation will be on the website.

The Taskforce wants to thank chamber members and the community for their support with efforts to engage in green awareness. Chamber members are reminded to bring a reusable drinking cup to the monthly breakfast. Mark your calendars that the Green Awareness Taskforce will be cel- ebrating America/Florida Recycles day on November 20th this year. Times and location(s) will be given at a later time. This will give the community another chance to purchase at reduced cost rain barrels and backyard composters. The Taskforce will be recycling for the 3rd year at the 4th of July Celebration at the Ft Walton Beach Landing. For more information, contact Tammy McDaniel, 2010
