I get along with bees usually. My dad always told me
they won’t sting you unless you get scared.
This bee kept circling around. I kept goin’ here and there and hidin’ here and there.
I climbed an apple tree. The bee kept goin’ around. She’d land on my face. She’d walk around. I sat there.
Pretty quick she went around my eye, around my nose, and up my nose.
She climbed up my nose. It tickled up in my left nostril. She got pretty well up there and was ticklin’ my eye.
I clamped my nose, climbed down the tree and ran to the house.
“Mom! Mom!”
She said, “What’s the matter? What’s the matter?” “There’s a bee up my nose!”
She put her fi nger on top of my nose. She said, “Blow!” Then, “Pshhh!”
The bee popped right out.
It was an odd experience I’ll never forget. My Husband
Marcia Merillat by Cory Caperton
My husband and my sister’s husband are brothers.
He was always at our house with his brother.
They were married before us. I knew him,
but didn’t ever date him. I was younger.
When he came home I had grown up. So we started dating for a couple of years.
One day he just handed me a ring and asked, “Do you like it?” I said “Yes.”
He replied, “You can wear it.” And we were married.
The Raising of the Flag Don Bellinger by Jared Dreffs
The fi rst sea battle
we shelled the island of Iwo Jima. It was like shooting a BB gun at a barn door. The Japanese were so entrenched in the island. I can remember the day the troops went ashore… the day they raised the fl ag on Mt. Suribachi. The Japanese were forced to the edge of the island.

Typhoon Floyd Kline by Carter Johns & Miguel Alvarado
We rode out one of the worst typhoons that the U.S. Navy ever got tangled up in.
That typhoon
did more damage to the United States’ fl eet then the Japanese did
during the war with all of their bombs and torpedoes.
Every ship that got caught in it sustained damage.
We were tangled Up in that storm
For about a day and a half before we got clear.
