what i believe should be true about kids and libraries:
that kids feel safe, understood, and wanted in the library (and not “accommodated”).
that the library is a welcoming environment.
that kids can express their whole selves in the library.
that the person in charge of the library understands and serves the kids who are present, and those who aren’t.
that activities in the library stimulate kids’ curiosity, and develop their abilities to identify, seek, fi nd, evaluate, and use information to answer their questions (and generate more)
that the adult(s) in charge of the library intervenes when ze recognizes a kid being hurt through any medium by another kid or adult.
22
that adults in the library are friendly, competent, respectful, and trustworthy
that kids treat each other and adults with respect (but not deference)
that the library is a fun place to go visit
that the materials in the library as a whole refl ect the full spectrum of life in our complex, changing world
that adults in the library fully integrate kids with disabilities into library activities
that adults in the library do no harm knowingly, and agree to change what does harm when brought to their attention
that kids choose to look up to the adults in the library as role models
that adults act with the responsibility entrusted to them by being a role model for every child
