This I Believe:

I believe that literacy today is about more than books.

A part of me has been a librarian since I learned how to read. I collected out of print books as a child. I’ve worked in public libraries and bookstores since high school. My own books are in Library of Congress order (not kidding). Suffice it to say: I love books - of all kinds. But I believe that reading and learning are not restricted to the consumption of long books with big words.

A book is no longer the preferred reading material of teens today. Teens read text messages, websites, tweets, status updates, blogs, even the detailed instructions of interactive video games. They read books by listening to Playaways, iPods, and audiobooks. I believe that teaching students today is not a practice of delivering information – it is the practice of teaching them how to use the information that is flooding in from all directions.

I believe that the abundance of new media needs to be harnessed for teaching purposes, and that the possibilities are endless. To me, requiring students to ‘unplug’, and put away the technology they have access to everyday, is a mistake. Teachers, especially Media Specialists, should be responsible for finding ways to teach today’s students to use that technology with respect and creativity.

Of course, I still love books. I think that for each reluctant reader, there is that one title that will open up the world of books for them. I remain devoted to the match-making of people with books. But I recognize that young people today need to be able to do so much more than read. And that they read so much more than books.

My Beliefs as a Youth Librarian The library should be a haven for children.

I will be the children’s advocate and try to provide books and resources that they find interesting.

I will respect and listen to my community so I can serve them to the best of my ability.

If I disagree with a community or parent’s choice then I will search for a compromise and try to balance my own person beliefs with the children’s needs.

I believe in finding books that educate and challenge children without boring them.

I believe in the power of teaching children to find their own voices through various creative endeavors.

I believe that there is a format and reading style to suit every child and it is my responsibility to help them find it.

I believe that I am still learning and need to ask my patrons what books will help them see themselves in the library.

I believe that I am part of a community and I can do more for the children of my library when I work and outreach to my community.

I believe that I am connected to a fantastic network of librarians and teachers who can help me serve my community best.
