Chris Botti
Wolf Trap, $42 in-house; $25 lawn
With his romantic bent and beautifully honed technique, this chart-topping trumpeter never has a problem wooing au- diences with a classic pop melo- dy. But Chris Botti has a lot more to offer. His concerts are enlivened by a first-rate jazz en- semble, prominently featuring guitarist Mark Whitfield and peppered with amusing anec- dotes about, for example, the lasting influence of Miles Da- vis’s early recordings or work- ing with Frank Sinatra in con- cert. ‘Louis’
A silent film with live music performed by Wynton Marsalis
Music Center at Strathmore, $55-$95
Jazz and film are collabora-
tive arts, of course, and this presentation of the new silent movie “Louis” certainly boasts some heavy hitters. Filmmaker Dan Pritzker recruited Grammy winner Wynton Marsalis, Os- car-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond and a cast that included Academy Award nominee Jackie Earle Haley to celebrate Louis Armstrong’s in- extinguishable spirit. Set in 1907, it’s a 70-minute cinematic portrait of the trumpeter’s early life in New Orleans, chronicling his struggles, joys and passion for music. Marsalis and classi- cal pianist Cecile Licad, sup- ported by other musicians, will perform the film score during the screening. Pritzker is also scheduled to lead a discussion about the film.
