Happening is led by high school students for high school students and administered by adults. It is an opportunity for teens to share their faith with one another in a supportive, Christian atmosphere.

Good Shepherd Hosts a Good Weekend: Diocesan youth gathered at Good Shepherd in Hemet for their weekend retreat. The rejuvenation of New Beginnings and the growing success of Happening cast a widening ripple of successful, creative youth ministry, as evidenced by growing numbers of registrants for youth events, to bordering dioceses.

entecost shifts us from the season of Easter into an almost tangible awareness of the Holy Spirit. To the

early church, the Holy Spirit was signifi ed by burning fi re, inspiring breath and speaking in many languages. That ancient gift of the Holy Spirit keeps us moving in our own lives, enabling us to trust in Christ and proclaim his resurrection through service to our

neighbors. In the Diocese of San Diego the Holy Spirit is at work, particularly among our youth, and can be seen most readily in the remarkable story of Happening.

Happening

Happening is a weekend retreat for high school Episcopalians occurring twice per year. The basic structure of the weekend is carefully crafted and strictly adhered to,

“They were fi guring out where they were going to sit when they become bishops of this church! It’s exciting to know that I’m a part of that lifelong formation, that I said, ‘Yeah, you can do that!’”

“It is a series of talks given by the students in a certain order,” said Greg Tuttle, youth minister at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Clairemont and chair of the Diocesan Youth Commission.

The talks focus on issues of faith that teens face on a daily basis. Each

talk is a critical building block in the creation of the Happening message. The sequence is intended to guide participants into safe environments where they can verbalize and/ or internalize their own faith questions. The ultimate goal of the weekend is to help young
