Shoes that tone and heal

MBT

M

BT – Retail Price: £155 to £159 www.mbt.com

The new MBT athletic styles boast 20% lighter, breathable materials in the upper and

a new heel shape. Whilst these new models offer a fresh and sporty look, the real innovation still lies in the sole. Wearers can enjoy the classic MBT benefits whilst wearing new lighter shoes – ideal for all forms of controlled exercise. Research also revealed that jogging slowly

in MBTs increases energy expenditure by 13 % compared to jogging in normal running shoes. Using MBTs for training helps improve joint stability, strengthen core muscles, and enhance co-ordination and agility, while also helping prevent injury and aiding muscle regeneration. MBTs also claim to help with recovery after training and can even aid in the

rehabilitation process post-injury. This is due to the sole’s unique technology, which improves muscle function and minimises joint loading, reducing stress on vulnerable joints.

Making their debut in the range are three fashionable trainers Fora, Moja

and Baridi each featuring the new sole and new materials. While, the men’s athletic range boast the Kimondo, a trendy trainer style. Chic additions to the female range include the sleek lace-up Sirima and the Mary Jane style Zuri. The Ibara is also a notable extension of the range; this casual offering is available to buy exclusively at Harrods.

From burning calories to relieving back and joint pain, soothing aching feet and tightening your bottom and thigh muscles, these “toning” shoes promise to improve your health? But, do they live up to the manufacturers’ claims Footwear Today road tests some shoes that promise a work out while you walk.

comfortable to wear. The toning effect improves significantly when worn whilst jogging!

FitFlop – Retail Price: £70-£75 www.fitflop.com

FitFlop sandals were originally designed by Dr. David Cook of London South Bank University to make it easier for wearers to stay in shape. With multi-density microwobbleboardTM midsoles to create an unstable environment, they force leg muscles to work harder to maintain posture and balance. The highly cushioned sole is said to reduce shock, decrease joint pain and reduce foot and lower back pain.

Designed by Anna Sui for FitFlop, the

Fiorella covers the foot in layers of flowers. Anchored with antiqued gold studs on a wood-effect finished midsole, with an all-leather, microfibre-lined upper, and featuring a super-slim toe post, all on the famous muscle-loading Microwobbleboard technology. While, the GOGH is the classic, slide-on clog, re-energized with a bright-colour kick start and rebel-round-the-edge studs. HAPPY GOGHs are constructed with high-shine, soft patent leather. All styles promise a work-out while you walk.

Our Verdict: My sciatica improved within

weeks of wearing FitFlops (I don’t leave home without them!). Another tester reported relief from plantar foot pain and toning benefits.
