o capture the view of the Mil- waukee Art Museum and its stunning Santiago Calatrava-
designed addition with the cityscape framing its splendor, there’s really only one place to set your easel or snap your photo. On a boat working with the waves. T at’s just what Lakefront Festival
of Arts 2010 poster artist Shelby Keefe did. She set sail, snapped a picture, returned to her studio and went to work in solitude. Usually, you can fi nd Keefe creating
performance art: She completes 30-inch- by-30-inch pieces “start to fi nish in about 20 minutes, set to music, with an audience,” Keefe says. “T ey’re done so fast, and they’re really, really free. Big, fat brushstrokes and nothing picky about it.” She does performance art to demystify the painting process. For this poster, she took her time. “It
was a good exercise to paint free without a time constraint,” she says. “I get to be a better painter when I paint freer, when the brushstrokes and the paint can talk, and I’m not forcing a subject.”
Keefe says there’s a lot of exaggeration
of color and activity in her poster, so it’s fun to establish the subject matter without putting in every little window, wave or rope on a sailboat. “I like being able to paint with as few markings as possible, and that one defi nitely does it,” she says. Described as a contemporary impres-
sionistic painter, Keefe operates her own studio in Milwaukee and focuses on urban landscapes, particularly Milwaukee’s. She conducts painting workshops and classes, and her work is featured in several galler- ies. Keefe has been a working artist since 1981. All of that time and experience and
creativity pays off in the Lakefront Festi- val of Arts 2010 poster.
