Something for Everyone at Diocesan Convention

Diocesan Convention is fast approaching. This is the one time of year when the whole diocesan household can gather – not just the clergy and lay delegates – but every member of the diocese. Bishop Mathes presides over Convention, the ultimate organizational decision- making body comprised of clergy and lay members. Convention meets annually for two days in February.

The 36th Annual Convention of the Diocese of San Diego will gather at the First United Methodist Church in San Diego on Friday, February 12 and Saturday, February 13. The church is located at 2111 Camino del Rio South, San Diego.

“I look forward to seeing each and every one of you at Convention,” said the Rt. Rev. James R. Mathes, bishop of San Diego.

“We come together to pray, worship, laugh, work and frame our diocesan life for the year.”

The convention meets to conduct business that points to

greater vitality and stability for all congregations in the diocese.

Approximately 130 clergy and 150 lay deputies from the diocese’s 50 active congregations will be asked to approve the budget and vote on other resolutions and nominations brought before the governing body.

According to church law (canon), Convention will fill eight expiring terms on various diocesan boards and committees.

In his convention address Bishop Mathes will update the diocese on progress in the past year.

Other business includes adoption of a budget that will allow for responsible management of the Church’s finances. Resolutions will be considered and, at times, debated before being written into diocesan history.

The convention opens Friday at noon with a music ensemble welcoming early registrants. Workshops and a reception

Buzzing About Brian McLaren: The theme of our convention, “More Ready Than You Realize: Discovering God’s Mission in the World,” alludes to the topic McLaren will tackle as his keynote address: 21st century evangelism. Far from a typical understanding of evangelism, the address will encourage listeners to think in new ways about this complicated cornerstone of our faith. In addition to this world renowned speaker, Convention offers a service project, a chance to see and support diocesan ministries, a diocesan- wide choir during the festive Eucharist and a special new awards ceremony during the gala dinner. All are welcome. Visit www.edsd.org for details.
