Two Major Prayer Events in May Americans to Pay

for Abortions

The 59th National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 6. The theme this year is “Prayer for Such a Time as This.” Prayer breakfasts and noontime prayer

meetings are scheduled all across the nation. In some cities, churches are coming together for special evening prayer servic- es. Learn more at www.ndptf.org. On May 23, Pentecost Sunday, the annual Global Day of Prayer will occur. From the Solomon and Fiji Islands near the international dateline, and then around the globe to Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas, Christians will be praying. With registered events in more than 200 nations, the Global Day of Prayer has become a rallying point for crying out to God for an inter- national revival. Never have we been so close to finishing our obligation to the Great Commis- sion. Never has the earth seen so many people come to Christ in such a short period of time. Yet, Europe and North America are experiencing spiritual poverty! And 2 billion people have yet to hear the gospel.

You can sponsor a Global Day of Prayer event in your city. You will find support material at www.waymakers.org. Live stream- ing from prayer events around the world will be available. For assistance, call the Church of God prayer office: 704-996-5091.

WASHINGTON, D.C. —

When the U.S. House of Rep- resentatives passed the Senate version of health-care reform on March 21, it opened the door for the federal govern- ment to pay for more abor- tions than at any time in histo- ry. Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., who had led the Democratic pro-life opposition, changed his vote after President Obama promised to sign an execu- tive order said to place certain limits on abortion funding. Nonetheless, it is the first time in more than 30 years that the government has departed from its longstanding policy of not using federal dollars to directly pay for abortions. The bill allows for taxpayer funding of abortion, calls for federal regulations that would expand access to abortion, and provides federal subsidies to help people purchase private insurance that covers abortion. Ashley Horne, federal policy analyst with Focus on the Family Action, said Con- gress blatantly ignored over- whelming opposition to the

bill. “More appalling,” Horne said, “is that House Democrats also ignored the voices of tens of millions of Americans who believe federal funding of abor- tion is wrong. They changed 30 years of policy protecting Americans of pro-life convic- tions from being forced to pay for something that violates their personal and, in many cases, religious convictions.” Although Stupak steadfastly claimed he would not support the bill with abortion language in it, he and other Democrats who say they are pro-life voted in favor of the bill.

The National Right to Life Committee said, “The executive order promised by President Obama was issued for political effect. It changes nothing. It does not correct any of the serious pro-abortion provisions in the bill.”

Phyllis Schlafly of the Eagle Forum commented, “Any formerly pro-life Democrat who voted ‘yes’ on the Sen- ate health-care bill . . . will be forever remembered as being among the deciding votes which facilitated the largest expansion of abortion services since Roe v. Wade.”—EP News
