Outlook
Classmate KatieMcCarty played three years of lacrosse atWest Morris Central High School. She comes from a winning background, earning two sectional championships.
Senior Burgandy McCurty adds athleticism and depth to the midfield and defense. This is her first year playing collegiate lacrosse after one of the most highly decorated volleyball careers in MAAC history. After the fall, she decided the competition didn’t need to end and she picked up her lacrosse stick for the first time since high school. She played three years of lacrosse at Schreiber High School on Long Island.
“We have a good mix of speed, skill and field awareness at midfield,” Duffy said.
Defense
Papa and Primo are the anchors of Siena’s defense. Papa is a senior who played in 15 games last season and she has developed into a vocal leader on the field. Primo started 14 of 16 games and had 18 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers. Her athleticism and agility will help win the ball back and move it forward.
Siena gave up 2.6 less shots/game in 2009 than they did in 2008 and almost a goal less.
Siena brings in three freshmen who will immediately help on the defensive end. Amanda Peguillan played two years of lacrosse and soccer at St. Anthony’s. She was selected to the All-Long Island Team and was named Academic All-American. Melanie Lynott played three years of lacrosse at Massapequa High School, the same team as McMillan. Katelyn Piegare was a three-year starter at Cold Springs Harbor High School.
“We’re hoping Melanie Lynott can be one of our four low defenders,” Duffy said. “She’s a great takeaway defender, and she’ll get the ball back for us. Peguillan is injured right now, but she is another player
who will see a lot of playing time and will be able to play into our style of defense. We were third in the nation last season in caused turnovers and we’re look- ing to lead the nation this year.”
Goalie
Sophomore Kristin Concordia returns for her second season as the starting goalie. It will be up to her since Siena doesn’t have a backup. She started 14 games as a freshman last year, compiling a 6-8 record with a 12.53 GAA and a .406 save percentage. She made at least eight saves in 10 games.
Concordia battled through a broken hand during last season and returned to play the final four games.
Schedule
The Saints will play a 15-game schedule this season with five at home and 10 on the road. Siena opens the season on February 23 at Presbyterian in Clinton, S.C.
“We have a strong non-conference schedule,” Duffy said. “These opponents will prepare us for theMAAC schedule which is our opportunity to getting into the postseason.”
Siena plays its home opener against Bryant on March 3 before hitting the road against Boston College (March 6) andWagner (March 10). The Saints return home to play its cross-town rival UAlbany on March 12.
Siena plays its next five games on the road, traveling to Vermont (March 17), St. Bonaventure (March 21), LeMoyne (March 27), Marist (April 3) for its MAAC opener and Dartmouth (April 6).
Siena plays its final games in Loudonville against Manhattan (April 9), Iona (April 11) and Canisius (April 16). The regular-season concludes with games at Niagara (April 18) and against defending MAAC Champion Fairfield (April 25).
The MAAC Championships will be held on April 30 and May 2 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
