2010Women’s Lacrosse

Andrea Duffy begins her second season as head coach of the Saints. She guided Siena to a 6-10 overall record in 2009, piecing together a roster andmoving the program in the right direction. Siena started the season 6-1 and had high hopes for the comingMAAC season. But limited depth and roster spots wore on the teamand they finished 6-10, missing out on the MAAC Tournament.

Siena is rejuvenated for 2010 and wants to make the Tournament and shoot for its first MAAC Championship.

Siena returns nine starters including last year’s second leading scorer Caitlin Mikel. Mikel, a junior attackman, scored 33 goals and had 45 points last season. She is now the focal point on offense with the graduation of all-time leading scorer Lindsey Rosecrans. The Saints only lost three players to graduation (Rosecrans, Courtney Highsmith and Ryan Tierney), but all three were captains and starters.

The future looks bright with a talented core of young players returning. Four freshmen started every game

last season. Deirdre McQuillan, Kristin McMillan, Michelle Andreo and Lauren Corso answered the

bell in their first year of collegiate lacrosse and made an immediate impact for the Saints.

Stepping to the forefront are seniors Allie Kain, Jaclyn Papa and Cate Quinlan who will serve as this year’s captains.

Attack

Mikel improved her scoring froma team-leading 27 points as a freshman to 45 as a sophomore last year. She can take on defenders, find teammates and score in bunches. Mikel is also a dominant player on draws. She was second on the team with 35 draw controls last season.

Kain has played in the most games (39) of any Siena player. She tallied 13 points in 14 games last year, but was only the third or fourth offensive option. The coaching staff hopes, with added touches, she can be one of the team’s top offensive producers.

McQuillan had an outstanding rookie season in 2009. She finishedwith 33 points, which is better than Rosecrans, Stephanie Petrucelli and Christina Pampalone had in each of their rookie seasons. That is rarified air considering they are the top three scorers in programhistory.

2010 Outlook

Quinlan has played in 37 career games and has 20 goals and five assists. She will be part of the core offense along with Mikel, Kain and McQuillan.

Freshmen Casey Harkins and Maggie Deloria both played at nearby Saratoga Springs High School and add depth to the attack unit. Harkins played three years of varsity lacrosse for the Blue Streaks. At 5-10, she’s the tallest player on the team and can dominate inside the eight-meter circle. Deloria played four years and earned All-League honors. She has a big shot and has good field vision.

“This is our strongest unit and we’ll need themto produce right away,” Duffy said. “With established players like Caitlin Mikel, Allie Kain and Cate Quinlan, the emergence of Deirdre McQuillan and our incoming freshmen, this will be a difficult group to defend.”

Midfield

McMillan ismaking the transition fromdefense tomidfield this season. She was a consistent player last season, starting all 16 games and ranking second on the team with 46 ground balls.

“She’s more of an offensive-minded player,” Duffy said. “We think she can get the ball out in transition and move it to the attack.”

Junior Erin Hepper is a dangerous player in transition. She missed five games due to injury, but averaged 2.4 ground balls in the 11 games she played. She had three two-goal games.

Andreo is a fleet-footed player with a great fitness level. She showed the ability to take over in her first collegiate game when she scored five points in an 18-11 win at Bryant. Andreo scored a season-high four goals in a 12-10 win against UC Davis.

Lauren Corso was key to Siena’s transition offense last year. A burst of speed would send her through the midfield and into the offensive zone. She scored seven goals and added five assists.

Amanda Corso is a more defensive player than her sister, but has been one of the best players this past fall. She started 13 of 16 games and had 28 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers last season, only scratching the surface.

Freshman KatieMaguire played four years of lacrosse at Northview High School in Duluth,Georgia. She is a quick player who impressed the coaching staff this past fall.

“Katie Maguire is going to see a lot of playing time in the midfield, because she’s an offensive threat,” Duffy said.
