Will all the turbulence surrounding “Jon & Kate Plus 8” harm or help the show’s chances of receiving an Emmy nomination? All will be revealed this morning.
We’ve Got Emmy Questions. The TV Academy Has Answers (This Morning)
answers to our many pressing questions.
E
What questions? Glad you asked:
KWill Fox’s “Family Guy” become only the second animated series ever nominated for best comedy in Primetime Emmy history? (No, “The Simpsons” is not the other one. The other one was “The Flintstones,” which was nominated in 1961, although back then the category was called Outstanding Program Achievement in the Field of Humor.) KWill “Jon & Kate Plus 8” be nominated and square off with “My Life on the D-List” for best non-competitive reality series? We’ll pause here a moment so you can savor the image of a Kate Gosselin-Kathy Griffin smackdown. FYI, “Jon & Kate’s” our-marriage-bites season debut
mmy nominations will be announced this morning, and we will finally get

episode aired May 25, just squeaking in under the Emmys’ May 31 deadline. Should “J & K + 8” get its first nom in that derby, it would become yet another reason the press must attend the non-televised portion of the two-
day orgy of statuette dispensing. The first reason is that Griffin is hosting for the first time. KWill the vampire curse be broken? The TV academy doesn’t take “fantasy” shows seriously. We, of course, see their point
entirely. But TV critics and “genre” fans don’t, and spent much of the ’90s gnashing their teeth over the Emmy snub of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” “Buffy” won only two Emmys — for best makeup and best “music composition.” But, of course, “Buffy” was on WB, and the academy really couldn’t get its head around a fifth broadcast network back then, so the show was working with two strikes against it at Emmy time. Now, however, we have a vampire show that the academy may not be able to ignore. It’s telecast on the TV academy’s darling, HBO. It stars Oscar winner Anna Paquin. It’s written by Alan Ball, who is an Oscar winner for “American Beauty” and who swept the Emmys off its feet with his HBO series “Six Feet Under.” Yup, “True Blood” has a lot going for it. KWill the broadcast networks finally wrest back the best-made- for-TV-movie Emmy from cable
(cough . . . HBO . . . cough)? HBO has had its claws into this race for years, taking the trophy seven of the past eight years. Seriously. Here’s the list:
2008: “Recount,” HBO 2007: “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee,” HBO
2006: “The Girl in the Cafe,” HBO
2005: “Warm Springs,” HBO 2004: “Something the Lord Made,” HBO
2003: “Door to Door,” TNT 2002 “The Gathering Storm,”
HBO
2001: “Wit,” HBO But this year, broadcasters may
have figured out how to game the system. First, those sly foxes at, um, Fox got the academy to agree that the network’s “24: Redemption” teleflick could be submitted as a made-for-TV movie. Meanwhile, we all know the academy can’t resist TV flicks about World War II. Well, CBS has one — “The Courageous Heart of
Irena Sendler” — and it starred Oscar winner Paquin. She played Nobel Peace Prize nominee Irena Sendler, who is credited with saving the lives of 2,500 Jewish children during the war. Your move, TV academy! KWill the TV academy cough it up one more time for three-time winner James Spader and put him in the running for best drama- series lead actor for his last gasp on “Boston Legal”? Likewise, will the sentimental academy hand sympathy nominations to canceled dramas “ER” and “The Shield”? K Can TV pundits shut up about the possible oddity of Holly Hunter and Paquin maybe both being nominated for best drama- series lead actress (Hunter for TNT’s “Saving Grace” and Paquin for the aforementioned “True Blood”) when, back in 1993, both actresses starred in the crunchy- gravel drama “The Piano,” for which both won Oscars? Stay tuned . . . .
HIGHLIGHTS
This morning, Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”) and Chandra Wilson (“Grey’s
Anatomy”) announce the Emmy
Award nominations, broadcast
from Los Angeles at about 8:35 a.m. Eastern time on any of the network morning talk shows (ABC, CBS, NBC). Just as Harry Potter fans start to line up for the new movie,
“J.K. Rowling: A Year in the
Life” (ABC at 8) profiles the author during the year before “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the seventh and final book in the series, was published. Power-mad Jessie ends his reign as Head of Household as “Big Brother” (CBS at 8) has the first eviction night, and either Braden from the “popular” clique or Chima from the “smart” clique is voted out of the house. The Cleveland Orchestra performs at Carnegie Hall on
“Great Performances” (MPT
at 8:30), featuring director Franz Welser-Most and classics from the golden age of Viennese music. Two contestants have their dreams crushed on national TV

Dance” (Fox at 9), and the Black Eyed Peas perform their latest single.
The models, all age 35-plus, face off in a lingerie shoot on
“She’s Got the Look” (TV
Land at 9), while a “working mom” challenge could save one woman from being eliminated. In other Harry Potter news,
“Discovering the Real World
of Harry Potter” (Travel at 10) explores locations around the world that served as inspiration for J.K. Rowling as she wrote the books.
“Project Runway” imitator
“The Fashion Show” (Bravo at
10) starts wrapping up for the season with Part 1 of the finale; the ultimate winner will receive $125,000 in next week’s Part 2. Toby bonds with a young
woman on “The Listener” (NBC at 10) when he finds out she has special powers that can revive injured people.
