As our readers well know, we print every issue on re- cycled newsprint with soy-based ink. Remember, many publications claim to be green, but only those printed on recycled newsprint are truly the most environ- mentally friendly. The paper used in glossy magazines requires substantially more production steps to first be
created, as well as during the actual printing process. And additional resources are required to recycle it.
We focus on reducing, reusing and recycling everything we can, even down to the tiniest of office supplies (for example, using both sides of every sheet of paper is a must, and our “stapleless” staplers make for an interesting discussion point). Many employees and vendors work out of their home-offices, eliminat- ing extra vehicles on the road during rush hour, as well as the duplicate re- sources to support an entire, separate office space. When I do meet people out in our community, I bundle appointments together to save gas.
In a previous job, I would watch in disbelief as executives purchased the lat- est and greatest luxury vehicle every one to two years. Talk about a waste of precious resources on so many levels. Personally, I take great pride in owning and using a car for many years. This month, I’m celebrating nine years with my trusty 2001 Honda Accord (still not quite as long though as the ten years I drove my Suzuki Samurai).
I have learned a lot about healthy eating from my significant other who is a vegetarian. While initially not setting out to do so, eliminating meats from my diet has been a welcome journey into discovering many new and great-tasting dishes (if disaster strikes, one of the few possessions I’ll clutch is my Moose- wood Restaurant cookbook, now a collection of wrinkled pages bound by two rubber bands).
Many of us are already doing much to live a greener lifestyle – but there’s always more we can strive for. Our “Spring Green Rehab” article (page 22) pro- vides many tips and resources for incorporating more green products into our homes. In his “Are You Green Enough?” column (page 26), David Wells identi- fies many areas where we can cut our home energy use to save money ahead of the looming triple-digit temperatures. Don’t forget to attend the numerous Earth Day and related educational events happening throughout the Valley in April and May (see page 8 for our listing and page 40 for our full Calendar of Events).
